Designed to Smile / British Dental Journal Art Competition
12 prizes of £200 and £50 worth of books
Dear Headteacher / Teacher,
The Designed to Smile programme in collaboration with the British Dental Journal is organising a
drawing / painting competition. The competition is open to all children in Wales aged 2-11 years.
The winners of the competition will have their drawing /painting featured on the front cover of the
British Dental Journal. This Journal is the official publication of the British Dental Association and is
sent to the majority of dentists in the UK and to hospital and academic libraries around the world
every fortnight.
The purpose of this competition is to further stimulate children’s knowledge of how to keep their
mouth healthy and to encourage regular dental care. The details of the competition are below. In
addition to having their drawing featured on the front cover of the Journal, winners will receive £200
for their school and £50 of books for themselves. There will be 12 winners in total. Winners and
their schools will also receive a copy of the Journal which features their prize winning entry.
We really hope that in addition to your current support for the Designed to Smile programme that
you will encourage as many as possible of your pupils to enter the competition.

The competition is open to all children in Wales up to age 11 (at last birthday). However, only one
entry per child is allowed.

The judges will choose 12 winners, one image for each of 12 issues of the Journal. We are keen to
have as diverse a range of images as possible, provided that they have some connection with
dentistry, teeth and oral health.
What materials can I use?
You can use whatever materials you wish, paints, crayons, felt tips, computer generated printout,
etc. Bright, eye catching colours are encouraged. However, so that we can copy the image do not
use glitter or silver paper in making your drawing. It is OK to use a computer if you wish but it must
all be the pupil’s own work. Clipart or images from the Internet cannot be used because of copyright
issues.
What size should by drawing be?
Drawings can be submitted on the template forms provided or on plain A4 or A3 paper. If you use
plain A4 or A3 paper, draw a horizontal line 75 mm from the top if using A4 and 106 mm if using A3.
This will leave a space for the drawing of either (210 x 222mm) or (296 x 312). These dimensions are
necessary to fit with the area available on the Journal cover. The paper should be used in portrait
style (i.e. the short edge at the top).

Do I need to put my entry on a special form?
You can use the entry form if you like and copies can also be obtained from the Designed to Smile
website www.designedtosmile.co.uk/drawing_comp.html
However, it is just as easy to use a sheet of A3 or A4 paper instead. Rule a line as described above
and make sure to enter the child’s details at the top.
How will my entry to the competition be judged?
The winning entry will be chosen by a panel of dentists and representatives of the British Dental
Journal. Twelve winners will be chosen. Entries will be judged in 4 separate categories: NurseryReception / Year 1-2 / Year 3-4 / Year 5-6.
When do I need to complete my drawings by?
The competition will close on 10th May 2013 and all entries should be submitted by that date.
Where do I send the drawings when they are finished?
You can either make arrangements for the drawings to be collected by your Designed to Smile
coordinator,
or post them directly to:
Dental Public Health Unit
C/o Prof I.G. Chestnutt
Cardiff University Dental School
Heath Park
CARDIFF CF14 4XY
All entries should arrive by 10th May 2013.
Do I need parental permission to enter the competition?
We will leave the judgement on this to individual schools. We have provided a template letter to
parents (At the bottom of this document), which schools may wish to use to ensure that parents are
happy for their child to enter the competition.
We would hope to feature the name, age and school of the winner in the Journal and the parents of
winners will need to indicate that they are happy with that, but we will confirm this with schools and
parents prior to publication of the winning images. Winners will need their parents to sign a form to
permit reproduction of the drawing on the Journal cover before publication.
What will happen to the drawings afterwards?
We regret that due to the anticipated volume of entries it will not be possible for us to return all
entries. However we will return the winning entries to the School and will help provide some local
publicity on the winners’ achievement.

This competition is being organised by the NHS Designed to Smile programme, with the permission
of the Chief Dental Officer for Wales, in collaboration with the British Dental Journal and the Dental

Not really, other than the fact that once published, a license to publish the 12 winning drawings will
lie with Nature Publishing Group, a division of Macmillan Publishers Limited. The judges’ decision will
be final and no discussion will be entered into regarding the winning entries.
Thank you for your interest in the competition. Please do encourage as many of your
