ADOPTION AGREEMENT
Upon receipt by the adopter of the animal from HORSE LOVERS UNITED, INC.
(HLU), the adopter hereby agrees to the following terms and conditions relating to
the care and custody of said animal.
Equines may not be raced or used for breeding purposes or for a business.
Adopter MUST PROVIDE kind treatment, feed/hay/supplements according to the
individual needs of the animal, fresh water daily, shelter, safe fencing, a grazing
area of AT LEAST ONE HALF ACRE FOR EACH HORSE ON THE PROPERTY
for the duration of the time the adopter has the animal in his/her care, regular hoof
care which includes cleaning and checking feet frequently and always before riding,
etc., professional farrier care every 6-8 weeks, regular parasite control, preventative
inoculations (tetanus, sleeping sickness, rabies, and any others recommended by the
veterinarian) ANNUALLY as well as a Coggins test and dental exam & treatment
ANNUALLY. A copy of the bill for same must be submitted to HLU as proof this
has been done annually. This is required in case you must return adopted animal to
HLU.
IMMEDIATE VETERINARY CARE MUST BE SOUGHT IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES.
Adopter must notify the president, Lorraine Truitt @ 410-749-3599 or secretary,
Roxane Stephens @ 757-824-4555 BEFORE moving animal to a new location or
upon death of adopted animal in which case A VETERINARIAN’S CERTIFICATE
MUST BE SENT TO HLU.
Horse Lovers United, Inc., retains ownership of said animal for its lifetime. THE
ADOPTER WILL NOT SELL, GIVE AWAY, ABANDON, OR IN ANY MANNER
DISPOSE OF SAID ANIMAL (EXCEPT IN CASE OF EMERGENCY WHEN
HUMANE EUTHANASIA IS REQUIRED/RECOMMENDED BY A
VETERINARIAN TO ALLEVIATE SUFFERING) DURING ITS LIFETIME
EXCEPT TO RETURN IT TO HORSE LOVERS UNITED, INC. Should adopter
have to return animal to HLU, adopter will be responsible for prepaying all
transportation costs.
Adopter (or anyone he/she designates) is requested to volunteer ten hours annually
to HLU. Please ask about our volunteer rewards program.
Horse Lovers United, Inc., has a right to send a representative to visit the animal
WITHOUT NOTICE AND TAKE IMMEDIATE POSSESSION OF SAID ANIMAL SHOULD ANY
OF THE TERMS IN THIS AGREEMENT NOT BE MET AND A FINE OF $1,000 WILL BE
IMPOSED UPON THE ADOPTER.
All adoptions are subject to Horse Lovers United, Inc. Executive Board approval.
Animals adopted from HLU have no guarantee. However, adopter will be made
aware of any problems known to HLU. Adopter agrees to hold harmless Horse
Lovers United, Inc., its heirs or assigns, forever. Adopter is responsible for all
financial burdens once he/she signs this agreement.
