RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, On Monday, January 25, 1993, many loyal residents of Orange County will
travel to the State Capitol to celebrate Orange County Day, a date on which Texans unite in
honoring the vital role this county has played in the industrial and recreational needs of this state
for more than a century; and
WHEREAS, Named for an orange grove found flourishing on the banks of the Sabine
River by French and Spanish explorers, Orange County was created in 1852 from the East Texas
county of Jefferson; and
WHEREAS, The county is bordered on the west by the Neches River, on the east by the
Sabine River, and on the south by Sabine Lake; Orange, the county seat, enjoys a rich historical
and cultural heritage, and is home to such popular attractions as the Heritage House Museum, the
W. H. Stark House, the Stark Museum of Art, and the Lutcher Theatre for the Performing Arts;
and
WHEREAS, Orange County contains vast mineral wealth in the form of oil, gas, clay,
sand, gravel, and other valuable lodes; since 1913 the county has produced more than 100
million barrels of oil; it is a center for petrochemicals, rice milling, seafood processing, and the
paper industry; and
WHEREAS, Agriculture also is significant in the county's prosperity; Orange County
citizens take justifiable pride in the area's rich agribusiness, which is based on an abundance of
timber, rice, soybeans, the raising of poultry and cattle, and crawfish production; and
WHEREAS, Orange County offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities as well;
its bountiful natural resources make it an ideal spot for enjoying such outdoor activities as
freshwater and saltwater fishing, hunting, and bird watching; since 1962 more tourists have
visited Orange County than any other county in the State of Texas; and
WHEREAS, Blessed with an abundance of commercial and natural wealth and with an
energetic population that stands confident in its outlook toward the future, this unique county and
its citizens have played a significant role in Texas' development, and their many contributions to
the state are indeed worthy of special emphasis and recognition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas Legislature hereby
recognize January 25, 1993, as Orange County Day and join the citizens of Orange County in
paying tribute to one of Texas' finest counties; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Orange County as a
commemoration of this grand occasion and as an expression of highest regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
