text and artwork) and the status of accepted manuscripts, please contact Author
Services Log-in Department, Elsevier Science The Boulevard, Langford Lane,
Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1GB, UK. E-mail: authors@elsevier.co.uk,

Submission of Papers
Authors are requested to submit their original manuscript and figures with two copies to the Guest Editor of the Special
Issue.
Authors should ensure that they submit manuscripts and meet any additional requirements in line with deadlines set by the
Guest Editor(s) to ensure that the entire issue can be published in a timely fashion.
In most instances, revised manuscripts must be re-submitted within six months of receipt by the author. Failure to do so may
lead to additional review and, in some instances, rejection of the paper. The Guest Editor may however set deadlines at
his/her discretion.
Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication
elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language,
without the written consent of the Publisher.
Manuscript Preparation
General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality
printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number
and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the
journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the
right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot
accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless
the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.
Paper Length: Authors should try to confine the text to no more that 25-30 pages, with a total manuscript length (including
figures and tables) of 45-50 pages.
Abstracts: The essential contents of each paper should be recapitulated briefly in an abstract at the head of the paper which
should not be more than 500 words long.
Keywords: Please provide up to six subject keywords, plus regional index terms. At least four of the subject keywords
should be selected from the Aquatic Science & Fisheries Thesaurus. An electronic version of the Thesaurus can be found at:
http://www.csa.com/helpV3/ab.html. You may also find a paper version in your library. The Regional terms should be
provided as a hierarchical string (eg: USA, California, Monterey Bay). Authors are also encouraged to submit geographic
bounding coordinates at the end of the keyword string.
Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text,
Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Vitae, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables
into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for
table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.
Units: In general, metric units should be used, preferably the Systeme International (SI). If other units are used (fathoms, F,
knots etc), the metric equivalents must be given in parentheses () or by presenting the dimensionally correct conversion
factors as a footnote.
References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript.
In the text refer to the author’s name (without initials) and year of publication (For example, Since Peterson (1993) has
shown that  or This is in agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)). For three or more authors use the first
author followed by et al., in the text. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors’ names. The
manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors’ names and dates are exactly the same in the
text as in the reference list. The title of the journal should not be abbreviated; titles of journals in Russian language should
be transliterated and not translated.
References should be given in the following form:
Gooday, A.J., Bett, B.J., Shires, R., Lambshead, P.J.D., 1998. Deep-sea benthic foraminiferal species diversity in the NE
Atlantic and NW Arabian sea: a synthesis. Deep-Sea Research Part II 45 (1-3), 165-201.

London, pp. 227-254.
Thiel, H., 1983. Benthos size classification. Deep-Sea Newsletter 20, 8-11.
References to unpublished literature should be set out in the format detailed below. The following information needs to be
provided: Names and initials of all authors, year. Title of work. All other relevant information needed to identify item
(e.g., technical report, Ph.D. Thesis, institute, current status i.e. in press/unpublished, etc),
Moustakas, N., 1990. Relationships of morphological and physicochemical properties of Vertisols
under Greek climate conditions. Ph.D.Thesis, Agricultural Univ. Athens, Greece, unpublished.
Examples of appropriate citation formats for non-text and electronic-only information can be found in the Author
Instructions at the DSR II web site. However, it is requested that a Web site address, or listserver message is given as a
reference only where the information is unavailable in a more permanent form. If such sources are given, then please give
as complete information as possible. All references to such material in the text of the article must be supported by a full
entry in the bibliography.
Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include
reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as Figure(s) and should be
numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be
included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author’s
name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and
points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size
suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of
shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If
necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Half-tone illustrations should be kept to a minimum.
Fold-in charts and colour: The cost of fold-in charts or diagrams and of colour plates must be borne by the author or his
institution.
Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet.
Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical
rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).
Electronic Submission
Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy
should match the hardcopy exactly. For authors using LaTex, the document style files, as well as the instructions
"Preparing articles with LaTex" in the form of a dvi file, can be obtained free of charge from any host on the
Comprehensive Tex Archive Network (CTAN) using anonymous ftp. The primary CTAN hosts are ftp.dante.de and
ftp.tex.ac.uk. The Elsevier macros are in /pub/tex/macros/latex/contrib/supported/elsevier. These can also be downloaded
from the Internet site:: http://www.tex.ac.uk.
In general:
Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety.
Always supply good quality originals of your artwork with the hardcopy of the manuscript, as we cannot guarantee the
usability of electronic graphic files.
Electronic files of accepted articles can be submitted on floppy disk, CD or over the FTP (http://ftp.elsevier.co.uk).
To help us:
1. Name your files using the correct extension, e.g. Fig1.cdr, tb1-6.xls, text.doc, fig1a.eps, fig1.tif, etc.
2. Save text on a separate disk from the graphics.
3. Please label all disks with your name, journal to be published in, software (e.g. Word 7, Adobe Illustrator 6.0),
compression software if used, hardware used (e.g. Mac, PC) and file names.
4. It is essential that the electronic and hardcopy versions are identical.
Text
 We can accept most word-processing formats, (ideally Microsoft Word or WordPerfect). Please check the style of the
journal, particularly the reference style, so that fewer changes have to be made, thus reducing the possibility of errors
being introduced. Most formatting codes will be removed or replaced on processing your article so there is no need for
you to use excessive layout styling. In addition, do not use options such as automatic word breaking, justified layout,
double columns or automatic paragraph numbering (especially for numbered references). However do use bold face,
italic, subscripts, superscripts etc.

When preparing tables, if you are using a table grid, please use only one grid for each separate table and not a grid for
each row. If no grid is being used, use tabs to align columns not spaces.
Graphics
 Computer-generated illustrations and halftones/line/tones (either colour or black & white) are acceptable. (Note: we
charge for colour printing, so check if it is really necessary.) Since we cannot guarantee the usability of graphic files,
original hardcopies of all illustrations must accompany the accepted printout of the manuscript in all cases.

The following points should be taken into consideration when preparing electronic graphic files: TIFF or EPS files are
preferred. Suggested packages for line graphics are Adobe Illustrator (version 3.0 or above), Freehand and Corel Draw.
Graphics made in WordPerfect or Word generally have too low a resolution. Files of scanned line graphics can be
accepted preferably at a resolution of 1000 dpi, for scanned halftones (300 dpi) and scanned line/tones (500 dpi).

Produce computer-generated graphics in greyscale if you require these to be published black and white, also where
possible, supply the original halftones as they are to be reproduced (i.e. black and white or colour).

Colour should be scanned in at 300 dpi, (500 dpi for colour line/tones). With CMYK electronic files include a 4-colour
machine or cromalin proof and check that all the separations (if provided) are colour coded.

Try to create your graphics near to the size they will be finally printed at by looking at previously published
manuscripts. This will help with the lettering and resolution of your files, as the resolution will be lost if we have to
enlarge a file and lettering may need re-keying if the file has to be reduced significantly. The final font size should be
about 6-8 pt. Always use the standard Adobe set of fonts.
If it is necessary to compress your electronic files, please indicate the software used.
Please note that if any file proves to be unusable we reserve the right to publish your article from the printout
supplied.
Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified for multi-authored papers) and
should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be
charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs
carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. If authors are expecting to be away
from their office when the proofs arrive, arrangements should be made with colleagues for the proofs to be checked in the
authors absence. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department at the address indicated at the bottom of the front page
of these instructions.
Offprints
Fifty offprints and a copy of the issue will be supplied free of charge to each corresponding author. Additional offprints and
copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author with the
letter acknowledging acceptance of their manuscript. Orders for reprints after publication will incur a 50% surcharge.
Copyright
All authors must sign the Transfer of Copyright agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement
enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author’s
proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including
reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations. Includes the
right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication
in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright
holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists.

GUIDELINES FOR SPECIAL ISSUE
Deep-Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography
http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/dsr2
http://www.elsevier.com/locate/dsr2
These notes are intended to outline the role of the Guest Editor and ensure good
communication between the Editors, Guest Editors and Publisher. Please do not
hesitate to ask should you require any further assistance with your Special Issue.
* Selection of Papers for the Special Issue
The Guest Editors are responsible for the selection of the manuscripts for the Special Issue. This selection
should be based on scientific quality of the papers and the topic of the paper should clearly fall within the scope
of the Special Issue. The final selection should form a coherent and complete set of papers.
* Peer Reviewing Process
The task of the Guest Editor(s) is to take care of the strict peer-reviewing process, which is essential to ensure
that only quality papers are published. Each paper must be reviewed by at least two international specialists
(three in case of doubt) and revised in accordance with their comments. If major revision is asked for by one of
the referees the paper must be reviewed again by at least one referee. The referees are the choice of the Guest
Editor.
* Stationery
Under separate cover a set of Instructions for Authors forms, which include notes on submitting your
manuscript on disk, and Checklist for the Reviewer forms are sent to you to assist you in the preparation of the
issue. At a later date you will also be sent three forms that need to accompany the final set of manuscripts.
These are the Arrangements for Colour Invoicing form, Critical Cover Information form and Special Issue
Checklist form.
* Time Schedule
It is recommended that you establish a time schedule and inform contributing authors of deadlines for the
submission of manuscripts, etc. Please send a copy of the schedule to Simon Richert at Elsevier and inform
him, as well as Professor J D Milliman, of the status of the project regularly. It may be possible that an
issue can be published by a certain deadline. However this decision is made at the discretion of the
Editor-in-Chief and Publisher, and we will require written confirmation from the Guest Editor (s) of the
definite date when the manuscripts will be submitted to the Editor to allow the issue to be scheduled into
the journal publishing schedule.
* Maximum Size
The maximum number of printed pages should not exceed 500. This equates to approximately 600 manuscript
pages.
* Ocean News
We will require a short piece about the issue for inclusion in the above Elsevier newsletter. This needs to be
100-150 words long, summarising the research represented by the issue.
* Electronic Annexes
It is possible that additional data can be stored on a floppy disk/CD-ROM which can accompany the issue. The
Guest Editor (s) is responsible for providing all the data on a mastercopy which Elsevier will check and
replicate.
* Colour Illustrations
Printing of colour illustrations is possible at author's cost. The price is NLG 800 (US$400) for the first page
(independent of the number of colour figures on that page) and NLG 400 (US$200) for subsequent pages
(independent of the number of colour figures on that page). However we can offer a reduced price if the Guest
Editor is prepared to coordinate payment through one invoice.
* Checklist
When sending the complete set of papers, please enclose the following:
- order of papers as they are to appear in the issue
- received/revised/accepted dates for each paper
- FULL contact details for the corresponding author of each paper (including fax/telephone number and e-mail
address)
- logo or sponsorship information (if necessary)
- all reviewers comments (+ additional comments by the Guest Editors and authors)
- preface
- Critical Cover Information form
- Arrangements for Colour Invoicing form
- Special Issue Checklist form
Please also ensure that each paper is as complete as possible:
- any figures submitted need to be good quality originals and must be clearly labelled
- any tables referred to in the text need to be included
- each paper needs to be submitted electronically on diskettes that are clearly labelled
* FINAL ACCEPTANCE by Editor-in-Chief
The complete set of manuscripts, including reviewers comments, relevant comments by the Guest Editor and
the authors, will then be evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Professor John D Milliman, who
makes the final decision on acceptance of manuscripts in consultation with the Guest Editor. Guest Editors are
therefore requested to ensure that authors are informed that their manuscript has been recommended for
publication. MANUSCRIPTS CAN NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR PUBLICATION BEFORE THEY HAVE
BEEN SUBJECTED TO A FINAL EVALUATION BY THE EDITOR IN CHIEF.
* Proofs
Authors should be made aware of the need to return corrected proofs within 48 hours of receipt (as far as this is
possible). If authors are going to be away when the proofs are sent they should make arrangements with
another colleague to check the proofs in their absence.
* Free Reprints, Free Copy and No Page Charges
Each corresponding author will receive fifty free reprints of his/her manuscript as well as a complimentary
copy of the issue. Guest Editors will also receive a complimentary copy of the issue. We do not have page
charges, except in the case of colour.
* Provide Information to Publisher
To enable the Publisher to plan for your Special Issue, we need to receive some basic information from you at
the earliest opportunity. Please could you therefore complete and return our Publisher Notification form as
soon as possible.
*Bulk Order Arrangements
It is our policy to offer competitive rates for bulk orders of the Special Issue. We will contact you ahead of
publication to offer up-to-date pricing information.
As a guideline, 2000 prices are as follows:
