530-012 Localization Project Introduction 1. This project is about localizing the User's Guide for a laser printer. 2. The customer imposed very hard quality requirements. So please remember that these instructions should be followed to the letter. 3. Translation should be done in Transit XV or Satellite PE. 4. As you can see from statistics, the document has many fuzzy matching segments. Please use fuzzy matching function intensively! 5. Among Fuzzy matches there is a large number of perfect matches with multiple translations. In this case please choose the most appropriate translation. Terminology consistency The customer specifically requires perfect consistency of the terminology (terms are translated identically throughout the text). Translation of UI messages You will receive the files where most of the messages are already translated into the target language. They are in double braces. For example (German): Click the {{Hilfe}} button. Do not change those translations! If you think the translation should be changed please send a note to the project manager at Argos. In fact all UI messages enclosed in {{}} should be tags, but in order to simplify editing and tag check they are not protected, but in the word count they are counted as pretranslated. The general approach is the following: 1. Windows system messages as well as general computer terms MUST be translated to the target language according to approved MS glossaries. 2. UI messages for Mac platform have not been localized; they should remain in English for all target languages. Translations should be added in brackets. To help you locate these strings we’ve added (_translation must be here in brackets!_) to the target. The preceding UI string MUST remain in English. 3. Other user interface messages should be translated. Translation comments 1. Previous translations were approved by the client’s local subsidiaries, so please try to minimize corrections. You have to fix only obviously erroneous translations, spelling/ grammar, terminology inconsistency and major stylistic problems. Please avoid minor stylistic changes. 1 2. For US paper formats keep inches, for other formats make sure only metric units (mm) are used. Please make sure there are no other references to US customary units (inches, pounds, degrees Fahrenheit, etc.) throughout the text, and only metric units (mm, g, degrees Celsius, etc.) are used. Please edit the pretranslated text whenever appropriate. 3. DO NOT TRANSLATE cross-references and FrameMaker variables. They are protected by tags in the target files and will look like this (Hungarian): Full tags: Lásd: <XRef id="5" result="“Using the Toner Save Mode” on page 4.9"/>. Short tags: Lásd: "Using the Toner Save Mode” on page 4.9. This is OK that the text in the target files is shown in English! It will be replaced by the corresponding translated cross-reference in FrameMaker. 4. DO NOT TRANSLATE ANYTHING PROTECTED BY TAGS! If you see a mistake in a text protected by tags (blue text) and wish to edit it, please consult the project manager at Argos first. 2
