EQUIPMENT AND PIPING
A.
Acid Neutralization Basin
1.
Acceptable manufacturers: R&G Sloan, Town & Country Plastics Inc., Orion, Park
Equipment Company, Enfield.
2.
Configuration: Size, shape, and connections as shown on drawings.
3.
Access cover shall be gas tight. Provide cast iron frame and cover at exterior locations.
Provide aluminum frame and cover compatible with floor construction and finish at interior
locations.
4.
Basin construction:
a.
Material:
Acid resistant ceramic similar to "Knight-ware", high density
polyethylene, polypropylene or concrete with polypropylene inner lining.
b.
Access cover: Basin shall have a gasket and bolted top suitable for proper
maintenance of basin.
c.
Provide all inlet and outlet piping as well as vent connection. In addition, install
1-inch PVC perforated piping with air hose connections for water aeration prior to
filling basin with limestone.
5.
Basin shall be filled with limestone supplied from basin manufacturer. Limestone shall be
1" - 3" in diameter and have a 90% calcium carbonate content. Provide additional
limestone to replenish all tanks one time after initial fill. Deliver limestone supply, in
containers, to owner upon completion of job.
B.
Acid Waste and Vent Piping:
1.
Acceptable manufacturers: Schott, Town & Country, Orion, Enfield.
2.
Glass piping shall be chemically resistant boro silicate glass joined by mechanical
couplings. Couplings shall have a 300 series stainless steel outer shield, a compression
line made of Buna-N-Rubber and tetra-fluoro-ethylene (TFE) seal ring. For use
anywhere in facility above or below grade. Follow manufacturers written installation
instructions.
3.
Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) pipe and fittings meeting ASTM E-84 and UL 723 for
flame spread and smoke generation. Join piping by mechanical couplings (above grade
only) meeting ASTM F1673 or by heat fusion meeting ASTM F1673 and ASTM 2657.
For use anywhere in building, above or below grade.

5.
Polyproylene pipe and fittings meeting ASTM D635/ASTM D2843 for self-extinguishing
characteristics. Join piping by mechanical couplings (above grade only) meeting ASTM
F1412 or by heat fusion meeting ASTM F1412 and ASTM F1290 not for use in return air
plenums inside building. Use only in areas approved by AHJ or below grade.
Durion pipe and fittings meeting ASTM A-518/ASTM A-861 joined with mechanical
couplings. Couplings shall have a 300 series stainless steel band, neoprene outer sleeve
and TFE inner sleeve. For use anywhere in building above or below grade.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01
INSTALLATION
A.
Acid Neutralization Basin:
1.
Install basin as detailed on drawings.
2.
Follow manufacturers recommendations for hanging or burial.
3.
Clean basin, fill with water and let stand for 24 hours without leaks.
4.
Underground basin shall be installed in a concrete vault for double containment.
5.
Prior to turning job over to owner, the basin shall be cleaned and filled with limestone as
described previously.
6.
Basins constructed of plastics not meeting ASTM E-84/UL-723 may not be installed
above grade in a return air plenum. All above grade basins need to be located in a closet
served with exhaust air and accessible for maintenance.
B.
Pipe and Fittings:
1.
Piping shall be Durion or PVDF meeting ASTM E-84 when installed in a return air
plenum. These return air areas shall be coordinated with mechanical contractor prior to
placing material order.
2.
Follow manufacturers written recommendations for hanging and burial of pipes. Refer to
details on drawings.
3.
Piping shall be tested with 10 feet of static head as described in Section 22 05 00.
4.
Label cover "Acid Neutralization Basin" with permanently attached nameplate or by
welding on cast iron cover.
C.
Sample well: A sample well shall be installed adjacent to basin on the downstream side.
Coordinate this location and well construction with authority having jurisdiction.
