Injections are used to temporarily relax muscles mainly in the upper face (forehead and frown lines) and around the eyes. Frown lines and wrinkles may develop due to using facial muscles repeatedly and the natural ageing process. As we get older the production of collagen and elastic production in the skin slows down causing lines to become permanent. Anti Wrinkle injections work by reducing the movement of the muscles in areas, casing the skin to stop being creased and allows the skin to recover. This causes lines to soften and even fade. Where the injection is made, the muscle is temporarily inactive. What does the treatment involve? Very small amounts of Botulinum Toxin are injected into the target areas using a tiny needle. This blocks the impulse from the nerve to the facial muscles, reducing the contractions that cause wrinkles. Following the treatment the skin over the muscles looks smooth and even. Does the injection hurt? The needle used is very fine and only a tiny amount of substance is used so pain is minimal. No sedation or local anaesthesia is required. How long does the treatment take? Approximately fifteen minutes. Due to the quickness and lack of side effects it is often called the "lunch time procedure". How soon will I see the results? You’ll start noticing improvements in two to three days. The overall effects will be visible in about a week. How long will the results last? The effects can last from three up to six months, at which point you can book a top up treatment. Clinical studies indicate that this treatment has a cumulative effect, so you should need fewer injections as time goes on. Are there any side effects? Only tiny amounts of Botulinum Toxin are used, so this treatment is not harmful. The most common side effects are temporary and localised bruising, slight redness of the skin and occasionally slight swelling at the injection site. On very rare occasions allergic reactions or drooping of the eye brow or eye lid can occur. Your practitioner will discuss these with you at the time of the consultation to ensure that you are fully informed of the potential risks. Dr David McIntyre BDS & Associates
