Science 9 Unit 1 Reproduction – Mitosis Mitosis: Making an Identical Cell 1. Mitosis – What is it? Mr. Tobin Due: Friday, Oct.16th 3. Diagram of chromatin 2. How does the cell get ready for mitosis? 4. Before Mitosis begins the cell is in Interphase: Diagram of cell (draw) What is happening? (notes) Diagram of cell (draw) What is happening? (notes) IINTERPHASE Phase 5. Mitosis METAPHASE PROPHASE Phase Diagram of cell (draw) What is happening? (notes) TELOPHASE ANAPHASE Phase 6. At the end of Mitosis, there is still only one cell, but it now has two identical nuclei. The next event in a cell’s life is CELL DIVISION. In animal cells, the cell membrane pinches in near the middle of the cell, dividing the cytoplasm into two new cells. In plant cells, a cell plate develops across the center of the cell, forming a new call wall between the two new cells. Early cell biologists called these daughter cells. As a result of mitosis, the number of chromosomes in the nucleus of each cell is identical to each other and to the number in the original cell. Diagram of cell (draw) CYTOKINESIS Phase 7. The Cell Cycle – What is it? What is happening? (notes) 8. Using SciencePower 9 p. 23 copy the cell cycle diagram, labeling everything you see. 9. How long is the cell cycle in this example? hours 10. How long is mitosis in this example? hours 11. What happens during interphase? Science 9 Mr. Tobin Assignment : Mitosis Questions – Please answer each of the following questions on looseleaf and attach to your worksheet. Answer these questions on looseleaf and attach to this booklet 1. What is the difference between chromatin and chromosomes? 2. State the function of mitosis. 3. What does mitosis do to the number of chromosomes? 4. Name the stages of mitosis. 5. Describe what happens to the chromosomes and chromatids during each stage of mitosis. 6. Describe what happens to the nuclear membrane during each phase of mitosis. 7. Describe what happens to the spindle fibers during each phase of mitosis. 8. Describe what happens to the centrioles during each phase of mitosis. 9. Describe how plant cells differ from animal cells with regards to cytokinesis. 10. A cell with 10 chromosomes undergoes mitosis and cell division. How many daughter cells are produced and what number of chromosomes do they have?
