Course Syllabus Beginning Tennis

I.
Course Description: The focus of the course is on practice of the fundamental
skills, techniques, and rules for the game of tennis.
II.
Course Objectives:
1. The student should demonstrate a working knowledge of the rules and
courtesies for the game of tennis.
2. The student should demonstrate reasonable proficiency in tennis skills.
3. The student should develop an appreciation for the recreational value of
tennis.
4. The student should develop an appreciation for social values obtained
through participation in tennis.
5. The student should develop an appreciation for the need of physical fitness
through participation in tennis.
III.
Schedule: Mon./Wed. 10-10:50 and Tues./Thurs. 12:15-1:10 classes
IV.
Course Outline/Tentative Semester Schedule for BOTH Classes:
Jan. 13 Tues.- sign in sheet for bonus points
Jan. 15 Thurs. – Go over syllabus, equipment, and class format
Jan. 20 Tues. – Forehand ready position stance & place on court
Grip, Introduce 3 rotation groups (will change each class)
Jan. 22 Thurs. – 3 rotations, review grip, face of racket, new hustle
drill.
Jan. 27 Tues. – 3 rotations, more forehand drills with machine,
Court 2 hit targets, Court 3 Alley drill with partner. Assignment
For next class: report on the 3 strokes of tennis.
Jan. 29 Thurs. - Collect reports, More FH drills.
Feb. 3 Tues.- 3 rotations, introduce on 1st court 1-handed Backhand,
Court 2 hit balls using FH & BH, Court 3 Alley drill
Feb. 5 Thurs. – 3 rotations, more BH drills
Feb. 10 Tues. – 3 rotations, more BH drills
Feb. 12 Thurs. – 3 rotations, more BH drills
Feb. 17 Tues. – 3 rotations, 1st court introduce the serve
Feb. 19 Thurs. – 3 rotations, Serve drills
Feb. 24 Tues. – 3 rotations, Serve to targets
Feb. 26 Thurs. – Practice for skills test go over & post
March 2 Tues. – Warm-up for test, Skills test FH, There is
a special set up these test, making up is hard, I usually just
use the part you are present for.
March 4 Thurs. – Warm-up for test, Skills test BH
March 9 Tues. – Warm-up for test, Skills test Serve
March 11 Thurs. – Meet in Activity Rm.#2, Go over the rules
Over how to score, Next class bring a report on how to play and
Score in Tennis. Assign teams
March 16 tues. and March 18 thurs. SPRING BREAK
March 23 Tues. – Mock game and teams begin playing 36 required
March 25 Thurs. – Games
March 30 Tues. – Games
April 1 Thurs. – Games
April 6 Tues. – Games
April 8 Thurs. – Games
April 13 Tues. – Games
April 15 Thurs. – Games
April 20 Tues.- Games
April 22 Thurs. – Games
April 27 Tues. – Last required day, review for final test
April 30 Friday – Consultation Day
TUESDAY’S TENNIS CLASS FINAL( For the Tuesday’s one day a week class too)–May 4
Tues. 10:30 sharp in Act. Rm#1 DSC.
Bonus points can be earned by:
Donating a can of tennis balls (2 limit) 5 pt. Each
Any tennis equipment (instructor judges)
Every game over the 36 required a bonus point
V.
Evaluation
Class participation 40% or 135 points. Part of your success in college is determined
by your prompt and regular class attendance which you will receive 5 points daily
throughout the semester. BEING PROMPT IS IMPORTANT. You miss roll call at
beginning of class you will not receive participation points. NO NEGOTIATING. You
are responsible for any missed classes and getting assignments in on time. There is –10 points
for any late work turned in. Ms. Prince is available to discuss your circumstance for missed
classes and will decide under which you may or may not make up assignments.
NO CELL PHONE IN CLASS, ON TENNIS COURTS, OR IN DSC FITNESS COMPLEX.
THE GYM IS OUR CLASSROOM TOO. UALR CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT POLICY
WILL BE FOLLOWED.
Skills Test 30% or 100 points. The skills test: consist of hitting 10 FH, 10 BH, and 10 Serves.
Final Examination 30% or 100 points. This final will be given out on the final examination day.

Rules and regulations at the DSC Fitness complex must be Followed. Proper workout attire
will be required for most activities. Inquire at the Equipment Service Desk for information
on locker and towel service. Always bring your STUDENT ID. If it is raining outside we will hit
inside in RB courts. Class will always meet. If canceled look on Act. Rm #2.
NO BLACK SOLE TENNIS SHOES ON COURTS, THEY LEAVE MARKS.
