Easter Switch Off - Guidance for Laboratories/Workshops The University is committed to reducing carbon emissions and becoming a low carbon organisation. Laboratories consume large quantities of energy – often 3 to 4 times more per square metre than offices. Before you leave the University for the Easter period, please take time to ensure steps are taken to switch off all unnecessary equipment in laboratories and in doing so help your School and the University meet its Carbon Reduction target. Listed below is some guidance for Laboratory users: Fume Cupboards and Containment Ensure SASHES are SHUT and the Fume cupboards SWITCHED OFF Ensure LIGHTS are SWITCHED OFF Ensure Fume cupboards ARE NOT used as storage cupboards Heating and Ventilation Ensure large spaces are not being ventilated or conditioned to a high specification in order to meet the needs of a small number of activities/devices, or occasional circumstances Lighting Switch off room/corridor lighting. Scientific equipment Switch off equipment that can be turned off or powered down when not in use, together with related devices (e.g. AC/DC converters). Responsibility Ensure all laboratory users are made aware of the actions they can take over the holiday period to reduce their environmental impact. To help ensure you switch off for the holidays, devise a shut down checklist specific to your area identifying which equipment can and can’t be switched off. Identify who has responsibility for ensuring specific equipment is switched off. If you have any queries regarding the Switch Off, contact the Estates Department on 028 9097 5005.
