CONSUMER’S GUIDE TO SELECTING STOP-SMOKING PROGRAMS
The programs listed here offer the kinds of activities suggested for reducing health risks through smoking cessation. Although we have
not evaluated the programs individually, we hope that the consumer guidelines offered here will help you choose a program that meets
your needs. For further information, consult the Community Services page of your phone book or call your physician or local Public
Health Service.
 General Considerations
Consult: If you have any doubts whether the program is safe for your, consult your physician.
Cost: If the representative will not discuss fees on the phone, find out if you will be charged for the initial consultation or informational
session.
Method of Payment: Do you pay separately for each session or for the entire course at once? Is there a refund policy? Is there a free
consultation? Is insurance accepted?
Convenience: Are the program location and meeting times appropriate for you and for your schedule? Some programs have flexible
schedules and varying locations.
Support and Follow Up: Programs that offer good support and follow-up systems have greater success. Support systems can include a
buddy (peer) or staff person whom you can call between meetings or sessions for support or encouragement. Follow-up may be periodic
phone contacts, reunions, or meetings after the initial smoking-cessation goal is reached.
 Considerations for Smoking Programs
Each person’s reasons for smoking and addiction are slightly different. That’s one reason why so many stop-smoking programs exist
today. Although they may differ radically from one another, each program may offer some measure of success. It is important for the
smoker to select the program carefully and to consider his or her own special needs. Techniques used include:
Behavior Modification: Understanding and analyzing the smoking behavior and changing habits by breaking the smoking behavior
pattern.
Group Therapy: Opportunity to gain advice, support, and feedback from other smokers who are quitting. Usually facilitated by someone
trained to provide smoking cessation treatment.
Cold Turkey: Stop smoking immediately with support and assistance for withdrawal.
Pharmacological Treatment: Use of nicotine replacement therapies, e.g. gum, patch, or other pharmacological agents to reduce
withdrawal symptoms.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
Smoking-cessation programs may be conducted on an individual or group basis. The duration of programs vary from several days to
several months. Be sure to find out how meeting time is structured and what kind of long-term support is available. Program staff also
varies: Some courses are led by psychologists or health-care professionals while others are taught by former smokers who have completed
the specific smoking-cessation course they are teaching.
The following is a list of smoking-cessation programs in the Bay Area. A brief description of each program is included, but details and
locations are subject to change. Please call each program for more information.

San Francisco, CA 94121
Phone Number
(415) 750-2004 or (415) 221-4810 ext. 2340
Description
Treatment involves behavioral counseling, nicotine
replacement therapy, and group intervention sessions. At the
initial visit, new patients are evaluated by a psychologist
regarding their smoking habit, nicotine dependence, and
readiness to quit. The first step in quitting involves setting a
date. For those individuals who appear ready to quit, a
clinical pharmacist provides further screening to see if
nicotine gum/patch might be used as a temporary substitute
for cigarette smoking; usually 2-3 months of nicotine
replacement therapy is needed.
Patients who participate in the Smoking Cessation Clinic
treatment program attend four weekly group sessions to
learn about behavior modification, stress reduction, selfhypnosis, relapse prevention, and other strategies for
successfully quitting and remaining abstinent from cigarettes.
Intended Audience
Any veteran who smokes is eligible to be referred to the
Smoking Cessation Clinic. However, priority is given to
service-connected and category A patients as well as to
smokers who have already developed smoking-related
