Guidelines for Successful Applications for SMPTE Fellow Grade
To aid in submitting a successful application for the Fellow Grade nomination, here are some
guidelines to ensure a fair and consistent consideration by the committee. The Fellow Grade
committee receives several applications each year which are thoroughly reviewed to fit the criteria
for the grade:

It is very important that the nominee is unaware that s/he is being nominated.

Be sure to complete the professional history section with as much detail as possible, the
history should be listed in reverse-chronological order with current (or most recent) at the
top. Resume style is fine.

The nominee must be a SMPTE member for consideration of Fellow grade. Also helpful is
indicating the length of SMPTE membership, you can get that by contacting Sally Ann at
headquarters.
Tips for ‘successful’ applications:
 We look for a strong commitment to the advancement of our industries throughout
the course of their career.
 In completing the application you are trying to ‘sell’ the candidate for the award; be
their advocate by adding comments from others who know of their work, “Tell the
candidate’s story” to leave the committee with reasons why the award is earned.
 Describe how the candidate’s work has made our industry better by describing their
contributions as an Engineer/Inventor, Executive/Technical Leader, or Scientist.
 More detail is better than less.
 Indicate any patents or other awards they received as well as membership in other
related organizations.
