1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division

The Manager, Pharmacy – Las Vegas, at the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) is
responsible for day-to-day operations and management of an assigned pharmacy location including
personnel supervision, business management, purchasing, and regulatory interpretation and
implementation. The Manager processes pharmaceutical orders and prescriptions, maintains records
on usage and cost, establishes drug quality specifications, maintains an inventory and purchasing
system, and advises professional health care staff and consumers on current pharmacology in order
to maximize the quality of patient care. The position supervises and instructs students, interns and
medical residents. The position reports to the Chair, Pharmacology (Reno).

60% - Pharmaceutical Orders and Prescriptions
 Process pharmaceutical orders from practitioners; read prescriptions and orders; verify
completeness and legibility
 Screen and determine validity in accordance with federal and State regulations, agency
policies, and applicable accreditation standards
 Review information related to cost, indications for use, patient related information, drug
interactions, and adverse effects in order to identify and prevent potential problems
 Complete patient records with pharmaceutical history
 Profile orders and prescriptions and record current information
 Certify prescriptions and orders for amount per dose, frequency and duration of therapy
 Complete authorization documentation
 Provide instructions and training to pharmacy technicians for filling prescriptions and
orders and to ensure orders are properly filled
30% - General Business Management of Assigned Pharmacy
 Manages general business operations of assigned pharmacy including purchases (drug and
other), and interpreting formularies
 Maintain fiscal records of pharmaceutical usage and cost of medications used by each
pharmacy
 Provide business office with cost or billing information in order to comply with federal,
State or accreditation requirements
 Maintain an inventory and purchasing system

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
It is a requirement of the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy that this position(s) exist within UNSOM.
The incumbent processes pharmaceutical orders and prescriptions, maintains records on usage and
cost, establishes drug quality specifications, maintains an inventory and purchasing system, and
advises professional health care staff and consumers on current pharmacology in order to maximize
the quality of patient care. The Manager is responsible for the business operations of assigned
pharmacies which range from $400,000 to $3,000,000 in annual revenues.
Impact:
A Manager’s accurate and complete performance of the job duties associated with the position is
crucial to patient health. Failure to perform as expected could result in substandard patient care and
can open UNSOM and the university to liability issues. Failure to efficiently manage assigned site(s)
would result in significant financial losses to UNSOM and the university.

Knowledge of:
 The rules and regulations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USDA) and Nevada
State Board of Pharmacy
 The physical layout and security system needs for University pharmacies
 Fiscal record keeping; supervisory practices and techniques
 Federal and State Medicaid rules and regulations
 Retail, hospital, clinical, and institutional pharmacy operations
 State and Federal laws and regulations concerning Federal Educational Rights and Privacy
Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
 Teaching/instruction methodology
Skills:
 Bookkeeping and accounting systems for collection of data, cost analysis, and account
reconciliation
 Strong verbal and written communication
 Supervisory and personnel management skills, practices, and techniques, including an ability
to teach and mentor staff and to achieve both results and client satisfaction
Ability to:
 Establish and maintain a formulary system
 Monitor patient's symptoms and response to medication
 Develop, interpret, and implement administrative policies and procedures
 Conduct drug utilization reviews; establish a pricing structure consistent with the cost of
pharmaceuticals and supplies
 Maintain and generate fiscal reports and records
 Maintain an inventory adequate to the agency's needs
 Recommend appropriate drug therapy to practitioners; assist in establishing, executing,
tabulating, and evaluating clinical studies regarding drugs

Bachelor’s Degree and five years, or a Master’s Degree and four years, or a Doctorate
and two years, of experience as a Pharmacist to include one year of experience as a
Pharmacy Manager
