Throughout my professional career I have developed international relationships, not only with Europe but also by establishing the Pan-African Paediatric Surgical Association and initiated the acceptance of surgeons from Africa to train under our auspices in Cape Town. From 1975 I was actively engaged in teaching and research and the relevant information is depicted in my CV. Throughout the years I have enhanced the quality and profile of our candidates, especially by the development of a Fellowship in Paediatric Surgery through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa. Through my burn research and engagement in burn care I am also regarded as the leading academic and practical burn surgeon in this country Abbreviated CV: Emeritus Professor Heinz Rode qualified as a medical doctor in 1966 and qualified as general surgeon from the University of Pretoria in 1974, from the colleges of Medicine South Africa, FCS (Surg) 1974 and from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (Ed) 174. He spent 15 months in Antarctica after qualification as the medical doctor and deputy leader to be the 9th South African national Antarctic Expedition. He was appointed Senior Specialist in Paediatric Surgery in 1983 and subsequently as principal specialist and eventually as Chief Specialist and Charles F.M. Saint Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and University of Cape Town in 1997. He held this position for 10 years. He is recognised as a leading burns surgeon in South Africa. Awards and Honours Douglas Medal for the most outstanding student in Surgery from the Colleges of Medicine; honorary membership of the Australia/New Zealand Burn Association; the Golden Jubilee Award from the College for outstanding services to medicine; and the Zora Janzekovic Golden Razor Award for outstanding services to burned children Academic Supervision He was the supervisor and examiner for 17 higher degrees. He developed a diploma in general surgery as well as a Fellowship in Paediatric Surgery for the Colleges of Medicine. He was the original driving force behind the establishment of the Pan-African Paediatric Surgical Association. He has been visiting Professor to various universities and has given various national and international eponymous lectures, established the EMSB course in South Africa and is honoured by PAPSA with a named lecture. He served on the editorial board of leading paediatric surgical journals and has received substantive financial support for research. His main interests are in trauma, neonatal surgery.
