National Emergency Management Projects
NEMP projects support the implementation of the National Strategy for Disaster Resilience,
including measures to strengthen communities, individuals, business and institutions to minimise
the adverse effects of disasters on Australia.

About usThe Attorney-General's Department delivers programs and policies that maintain and
strengthen Australia's national security and emergency management procedures.
Plan and prepareThe Attorney-General's Department continues to establish, fund and support
several capability development activities, often in partnership with the states and territories. The
goal of capability development is to enhance national emergency management capabilities
through the identification of gaps and the development then implementation of Australian
Government initiatives to address these gaps.
Respond and recoverThis department maintains response plans to provide Australian
Government non-financial assistance to states and territories in response to an emergency.
International partnershipsThe department is the Australian Government focal point for the
United Nations' Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015:2030. The Sendai
Framework is the global blueprint and fifteen-year plan to build the world's resilience to natural
disasters.
CommunityAustralia is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) countries in
the world. This diversity can influence the disaster resilience of communities and individuals. It
is vital that communities have access to current information about disaster risk and mitigation,
including relevant local knowledge tailored where appropriate to different target audiences.
Disaster assistance and grantsAustralian Government assistance is available in times of need to
help eligible individuals and communities recover from a major disasters. Assistance is provided
to aid the recovery of Australians affected by local and international disasters.
Tools and resourcesThe Attorney-General's Department provides a range of tools and resources
that are available for individuals, agencies and organisations interested or involved in the
emergency management sector in Australia.
National Strategy for Disaster ResilienceThis strategy recognises that a national, coordinated and
cooperative effort is needed to enhance Australia's capacity to prepare for, withstand and recover from
disasters.
Domestic response plans and arrangementsWe maintain response plans to assist the states and
territories respond in an emergency.
Crisis Coordination CentreThe Crisis Coordination Centre is a dedicated all-hazards monitoring facility
that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The centre provides whole-of-government situational
awareness to inform national decision-making during a crisis.
The Attorney-General's Department fund and administer nationally significant emergency
management initiatives that support measures to minimise adverse effects when disasters occur
in Australia. The Minister for Justice is responsible for national emergency management and
disaster resilience. Emergency management involves developing policy and strategy to respond
to, and minimise, the effects of natural disasters or crises.
