In 1952, Council House, The YMHA and a few smaller agencies merged to form the
Jewish Community Centers Association (JCCA). A YMHA (Young Men’s Hebrew
Association) operated in St. Louis since the 1880s, and blossomed in the 1920s,
especially after a new facility at 724 N. Union Blvd. opened in 1927.
The JCCA found a suitable site on Schuetz Road in 1958, and they built a satellite facility
in University City in 1961, known as the Yalem Building. The present Schuetz Road
campus opened in 1963.
The collection contains a large number of photographs and oversize material, including
the Ben Loewenstein YMHA Reminiscences Scrapbook, 1896-1905. Mr. Loewenstein
was President of the YMHA for several years during this period. The scrapbook contains
information about the Jewish community in St. Louis 1896-1905, often with great detail
about people and events; also contains photographs of the YMHA building at 2737
Locust.
