Department of Mathematical Sciences
Senior Lecturer/Reader in Pure Mathematics
Further Particulars
The Position
We seek candidates who have a strong track record of independent research of
international standing. The appointment will be made in an area which resonates
with and/or complements existing departmental research strengths in Pure
Mathematics (see below for details). Applications in the area of Mathematical
Analysis, broadly interpreted, are particularly welcome.
The person appointed will be expected to sustain a leading research programme,
and successfully secure external funding. Candidates should have a strong
interest in pursuing excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and
in supervising graduate students.
It is anticipated that the interviews will take place on 9 May 2012.
A concurrent search is open for a position in Applied Mathematics at the Senior
Lecturer or Reader level.
Informal enquiries about the position may be made to Prof. G R Burton (email:
g.r.burton@bath.ac.uk, tel: +44(0)1225 386218), Prof. D M J Calderbank (email:
d.m.j.calderbank@bath.ac.uk, tel: +44(0)1225 386219), or Prof. J J Faraway, Head of
Department (email: j.j.faraway@bath.ac.uk, tel: +44(0)1225 386992).
The Department
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science, and
is one of the largest of the seventeen departments making up the University of
Bath. It comprises two groups (Mathematics and Statistics) which together cover
a wide range of pure and applied mathematics, and probability and statistics.
The Department has a strong international reputation across this range: in the
2008 RAE 60% of our research in Pure Mathematics and Statistics and 70% of
our research in Applied Mathematics was rated Internationally Leading or
Excellent, placing us well within the top 10 departments in the UK. The
Department is one of only two departments in the UK to achieve the top score of
24 points in the QAA Subject Review of Mathematics and Statistics teaching. It
was rated fifth among all UK Mathematics Departments in the 2012 Complete
University Guide league table. The University was named by The Sunday Times
as the `University of the Year ‘ for 2011-12.
Research in the Department is based on teams focusing on particular research
areas but with a strong culture of collaboration and mutual support. In particular,
there is a strong tradition of interaction between pure and applied
mathematicians and a lively, well attended, “Landscapes” Colloquium. The
research in pure mathematics focuses on algebraic and differential geometry,
group theory, representation theory, geometric analysis, functional analysis and
theoretical nonlinear PDEs.
The teaching activities of the Department encompass various undergraduate
degree programmes, service teaching in other departments, three MSc
programmes and a Doctoral College for Ph.D. students.
