Math Integrating Science Strategic Lesson Plan Teacher: Mitchell Dates: Equivalent Ratios and Problem-Solving Stage 1 – Desired Results Amount of Time: 94 Common Core Standards: 6.RP.3Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems. o A. Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios. Language Proficiency Level: 6th Grade Student Learning Objective (s): I can complete a table of equivalent ratios with whole number values including measurements. •I can create a function table and Compare proportional quantities. •I can plot pairs of values on a coordinate plane Lesson Outcome (s): Students will determine missing values in tables to solve problems and apply ratio tables to solve real-world problems. Essential Questions: (Checking for Understanding) How can you use tables to find equivalent ratios? Key Vocabulary: Equivalent ratios Measurement Function table Plot Coordinate plane Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence Performance Task: (created artifact…) Notetaking Completed Book Examples Constructed Ratio Tables Summative Task: (quizzes, tests, prompts) Exit Ticket: Equivalent Ratios Stage 3 – Learning Plan Anticipatory Set (10): BellRinger: You jog 2 kilometers in 12 minutes. At this rate, how long will it take you to complete a 5-kilometer race? Input/Modeling/Crafting (25): Today class, we are going to discuss more in depth how to use ratio tables to solve problems. We have seen ratio tables here and there in discussing ratios and unit rates in finding three equivalent ratios. Also, we saw how useful they can be to help estimate the outcome of a situation as in the Sandbag Brigade. Let’s begin with the Exploration example 1 on pg.291 of your math book. You and your partner will take 5 minutes to READ, DISCUSS, and COMPLETE example 1. What ratio that is equivalent 2/5 is shown in the column for 9? How do you know the ratios are equivalent? The answer is 18/45. Both terms in the ratio are multiplied by 9. In the table of equivalent ratios, what pattern do you see in the oranges row? Each time you move to the right the amount of oranges increase by two. Math Integrating Science Strategic Lesson Plan Teacher: Mitchell Dates: What pattern do you see in the apples row? For each move to the right, the number increases by 5. Complete the Reflect portion of Example 1.(5min) Now you and your partner are going to complete Exploration Example 2 on pg. 292.(5min) How far does the plane travel in 2 hours? 280 miles How can you find how far the plane travels in 1 hour? Since the plane travels 280 miles in 2 hours, divide 280 by 2 to determine how far it travels in 1 hour. What relationship do you see between the distance and time in every column of the table? The distance divided by time is 140. Complete Reflect portion of Example 2.(3min) Now you and your partner Complete Exploration example 3. How can you use the ratios to determine which recipe makes stronger lemonade? The recipe with greater ratio of lemonade juice to water (or greater ratio of lemonade to water) makes stronger lemonade. How can you compare the two ratios in the problem if they have different denominators? You can observe the pattern in the table and compare the amounts of lemon juice for the same amount of water. Guided Practice (25): Complete Examples 4-6 with your partner. Independent Practice (20): Complete Practice on pg. 294. Closure (14): Exit Ticket: Equivalent Ratios Differentiation Notes: Students will be paired according to their abilities based on performance: Proficient: Use a variety of representations and strategies to solve these problems. Find missing values in tables and plots values on the coordinate plane. Below: Use a limited variety of representations and strategies to solve these problems.
