Summer Research Fellowships (SRF)

Summer 2015

Introduction

Scholarship, creativity, and engagement provide the intellectual foundation for faculty life at The

University of North Carolina at Pembroke. In order to encourage and support junior faculty

(tenuretrack, but not yet tenured), the University, through the Provost’s Office, provides research and scholarship funding. The Summer Research Fellowship (SRF) makes a limited number (6) of

$5,000 salary stipends available for junior faculty to pursue promising research, creative, and engagement projects for one five-week summer term.

Eligibility

Only full-time, tenure-track faculty members within the first three years of tenure eligibility are eligible for this program. Faculty who are just beginning to establish their research and/or creative works portfolio/agenda will be given priority consideration for a summer fellowship. Faculty may hold concurrent SRF and internally and/or externally sponsored grants. Faculty members are prohibited from teaching during the five-week summer term of their fellowship. Summer

Research Fellowships are non-renewable and faculty members are eligible for only one (1) SRF.

Allowable Activities (Definition of Research)

The Summer Research Fellowship program provides support only for faculty research projects.

Research is broadly defined as all creative, critical, scholarly, and/or empirical activity that expands, clarifies, reorganizes, or develops knowledge or artistic perception. This definition of research includes the demonstration, implementation, application and dissemination of research results and those grants designated as research by the granting agency.

Ineligible Activities

DEPARTMENTAL CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT -- includes activities such as curriculum development, the preparation of curriculum materials, curriculum revisions, student interest surveys;

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT -- includes activities such as learning an established technique, a language or methodology; thesis or dissertation;

INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH -- includes activities such as studies conducted related directly to the operation of the university;

PUBLIC SERVICE and CONSULTING ACTIVITIES.

Policies and Regulations

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke rules, regulations, and policies regarding the use of human subjects, animal care, biosafety, hazardous waste, radioactive materials, patents and copyrights, royalties and fees, as well as other appropriate University policies apply. Faculty are responsible for following the established University compliance procedures regarding these rules and regulations. Faculty may obtain additional information regarding these policies from the

Center for Sponsored Research and Programs.

Fiscal Regulations

The expenditure of funds from this program follows normal UNCP policies and procedures.

Proposal Review

We anticipate that there will always be more proposals submitted than can be funded. All requests for funding undergo a peer review process by the Faculty Grants Committee and the

Director of the Teaching and Learning Center before final approval by the Provost. Proposals will be assessed based on the clarity of the project description and the extent to which the project appears to help the faculty member begin to establish a scholarly record at UNCP. Evidence for the latter condition can be made evident by the applicant clearly defining scholarly goals during the fellowship period and any additional material that supports the significance of the project to the faculty member’s scholarly development.

All final decisions regarding funding for Summer Research Fellowships rest with the Provost.

Reporting Requirement

Recipients of Summer Research Fellowships are required to submit a brief report [1-2 pages maximum], or copy of the work completed within 30 days after the end of the fellowship period.

Summer Research Fellowship applications are due Friday January 9, 2015 .
