HOMEWORK 2
CSE 577
Due: 2/3/2011 11:30pm
Learning Objective
I. Analog circuit implementation introduction: (1) setup the CAD tool, (2) schematic entry, (3) HSpice simulation, (4) layout
entry, (5) verify the functional correctness.
II. Gain-bandwidth product of a differential input amplifier: (1) understand gain, (2) understand bandwidth, (3) understand
circuit operation.
Instruction
1. Follow the CAD Tool Quick Start Tutorial ( click here:
http://www.cse.psu.edu/~kyusun/class/cse577/11s/hw/hw1/LabGuideC577G6.pdf )
2. Design the following differential input amplifier circuit (schematic and layout) using 'virtuoso' tool. Then verify the
design using 'hspice' too. Answer any questions below.
Transistor M0 and M1 size: W=19.2um, L=0.9um
Transistor M2 and M3 size: W=29.4um, L=0.9um
Transistor M4 size: W=18.45um, L=0.9um
3. Determine the gain-bandwidth product of your 'amp' with output load of 1 fF. You should design both schematic and
layout views of the amplifiers, which should satisfy: (1) Correct amplifier function, (2) No DRC errors, (3) No LVS
errors. You need to extract the netlist from the layout including the parasitic capacitors and use 1fF as the output
load. Then, you should find out the Gain-bandwidth product of your design through hspice simulation (DC, TRAN,
AC).
4. Create another project 'amp2' same as above. Now, resize M0 through M4 to maximize the gain-bandwidth product
of amp2 with 1 fF output load.
5. Create a MS Word file (.doc) for the Homework 1 Report. First, design a cover page with course and your
information. Second, write the gain-bandwidth products of 'amp' and 'amp2'. Third, outline the procedure how you
obtained the sizes of M0 through M4 for the amp2. Name your Word file: hw2.doc.
6. Create a .zip file of your design files: hw2 schematics, layouts, .hsp files, .doc report file, etc. You may want to delete
.tr0 file for its size is usually large.
7. Name your .zip file with hw2_yourLastName. For example, my file name will be hw2_choi.zip in all lower case
letters.
8. Turn-in your project zip file through Penn State ANGEL. Deposit your zip file into the Homework 2 DropBox under
CLASS tab in CMPEN 411 Course.
9. Make sure that you include all the files in your project folder. Turnin your project before 11:30pm on the due date.
