WONDERING WHO PROVIDES THE TASTY COFFEE HOUR FOOD
EACH SUNDAY?
… we do! Each person or family in the Follen Directory is asked to provide food
approximately every year or two. There is no money in the budget for Coffee Hour
food – it is generously provided each week by all of us.
The Follen Social Events budget allows us to provide coffee and tea for all events – our
beloved Equal Exchange coffee is Fair Trade. Milk and cream is provided by Social
Events members.
Also, Coffee Hour set-up and clean-up is managed by different rotating “Coffee Elves.”
Enjoy Coffee Hour? Thank an Elf!
Willing to join us in the kitchen? Contact Caroline Walters at cwalters@suffolk.edu.

Friday, September 30: PARTY at Follen! First Chance Fleas and Cafe!
Come to Follen from 7-9pm next Friday, September 30, and get your first chance at
Follen's Fabulous Flea Market! The East Village Fair Flea Market is open that night—but
only to Follenites. If you're reading this announcement, you're invited! Bring the whole

Get the good stuff before the Flea Market opens to the public on Saturday—bikes and
skis in perfect condition, jewelry, silly kids' games, sturdy housewares, enthralling
books—and then share delectable cakes and pastries baked especially for Follen at the
First Chance Cafe upstairs in the Anne Smith Room. It's one of Follen's finest
entertainments!
The East Village Fair team is also looking for volunteers to staff the Flea Market and
Book Sales that night. Have fun talking with your fellow Follenites and help out. Please

CALL FOR ARTISTS
of all ages, media, & levels of experience
The Gallery in the Anne Smith Room celebrates the creativity of Follen’s artists—
accomplished, emerging, or accidental—in solo, shared, and group shows. We aim to
have a new show every six weeks. What time would suit you best?
Please let us (see “us” below) know if you are interested in a solo or shared show. As
for group shows, consider the following preliminary descriptions; what do have or might
create that would fit?
• Snapshot Serendipity – A group show of photographs that exceeded expectations. You
know, the ones where we say, “Hey, I really like the way that turned out.” For all levels.
Don't be shy!
• pARTicipation event – Arrive, play, create, display (date and time to be announced).
• Springing Spring – A group show in late winter to help begin the thaw.
If you would like to discuss what you would like to do, please contact Tempe Goodhue
(tgoodhue@aol.com) Ann Schauffler (aschauffler@rcn.com), and/or Jane Spickett
(jasowl@earthlink.net). We look forward to helping everyone at Follen be seen and see.

NOVEMBER 20: THANKSGIVING SUNDAY SERVICE AT FIRST
CHURCH IN ROXBURY - Volunteers needed!
For the past 4 years we have journeyed to the beautiful historic First Parish Church at
John Eliot Square in Roxbury -- home of the UU Urban Ministry (www.uuum.org) -- to
hold our pre-Thanksgiving worship service. This year’s service is on Sunday November
20. If you have attended in the past you will recall the joyous and uplifting sense of
potential we gain by showing our support for the UU Urban Ministry with our presence
there.
Planning for this year's service is getting underway and we need help. We are looking
for the following types of assistance: transportation planning & coordination, hospitality
planning and sanctuary decoration. Please reply to Sally Cassells by email
(sally44@rcn.com) or phone (781 861 3750).

RENEWAL HOUSE SHELTER NEEDS YOU!
Renewal House is a shelter for women and children escaping domestic violence,
operated by the UU Urban Ministry. Follen has been asked to help with 2 exciting
upcoming Renewal House events. Contact Lisa Snellings if you can help:
lisa@snellingslaw.com or 781-635-6383.
Saturday, September 24, Beyond Shelter Gathering in Roxbury
"Beyond Shelter" is a quarterly gathering for Renewal House residents and former
residents. Follen will provide a light lunch for 40-50 mothers and children, staff and
volunteers, and supplies and instructions to make tie-dye shirts. For the lunch we need
donations of drinks, sandwich makings, chips, and fruit, and for the tie-dye we need
disposable gloves, old shirts or smocks, and new white cotton t-shirts, any size.
Financial contributions are also welcome. We need 2-4 more volunteers to help at the
party. We will be carpooling to Roxbury, leaving Lexington around noon and returning
by 4.
Saturday, October 1, East Village Fair
For the last 4 years Follen has hosted Renewal House families and staff at the EVF. A
group of about 16 arrives by UU bus at around 10 am, and departs around 2 pm. Follen
provides a gathering spot in Marshman, food and game tickets, and some flea market
spending money. We need 2-4 volunteers to work in 2 hour shifts to help host these
guests.

TOMORROW! SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, MOVING PLANET RALLY
FOR THE CLIMATE
Rally for the Climate is this Saturday, September 24 at Christopher Columbus Park
in Boston. Want to join other Follen folk carpooling to Alewife to attend? Contact
Janet Lane at j.f.lane@rcn.com.
A coalition of Lexington faith communities are also going:
We'd love to have you join a number of Lexington folks who are going to be riding from
Lexington Green to the 350.org Moving Planet rally on Saturday - September 24th.
We'll be meeting at Lexington Green at 2:00 PM.
Some folks will be riding bikes, some folks taking the T, some folks riding in Prii
carpools. The details can be found at revolutionaryride.blogspot.com. For more
information contact marksandeen@gmail.com
This event is sponsored by a number of groups including World Council of Churches,
Oxfam, 350.org and Sierra Club. The Boston rally follows a civil disobedience action in
Washington DC in late August. Protests were held in front of the White House to ask
Obama to veto the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline that would carry oil from
the tar sands of Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico. 1252 people were arrested, including
people from Lexington, to call attention to the need to shift to renewable energy, and
to stop construction of the pipeline. (Go to tarsandsaction.org for more information).
