Progress in Medieval Irish Lexicography Queen’s University Belfast 15-16 September 2011 CALL FOR PAPERS This symposium on Medieval Irish Lexicography will be hosted by the electronic Dictionary of the Irish Language (eDIL) project at Queen’s University Belfast from 15th to 16th of September, 2011. The eDIL project is now nearing completion of a supplement to the Royal Irish Academy’s Dictionary of the Irish Language based on a thorough examination of scholarly articles and papers published since 1932. The supplement will consist of over 3000 corrected and supplementary entries and will be available on the eDIL site (www.dil.ie). The symposium is intended to bring together experts working in medieval Irish language with a view to exploring major trends and advances in our understanding of the lexicon since the publication of DIL’s various fascicles and in particular since the completion of the Dictionary in 1976. Papers are particularly welcome in the areas of law, medicine, the Church, material culture, onomastics, medieval glossaries, cryptology, loanwords and reuse of the lexicon in the modern language. Papers may explore the relationship between lexicography and the process of editing and translation, single significant words, categories of words, the lexicon of a selected text, or the dating of particular words. It is hoped that the symposium will help to identify success factors in advancing our understanding of the lexicon, as well as bring potentially productive areas of research to light and highlight outstanding problems and desiderata. Each paper should last no longer than 20 minutes. Those wishing to read a paper at the conference should submit a title and brief summary (c.200 words) to the eDIL project at the address below. Closing date for abstracts: 3 June, 2011.
