PROMPT
As a health care worker, you will encounter people, both co-workers and patients, from many cultures. Each person will
bring an array of experiences, attitudes and beliefs that may differ from your personal beliefs. In many cultures, the
people rely on “home-remedies” or “grandmother’s cures” to treat ailments rather than on the medical profession. These
forms of non-traditional medicine are a part of the culture from whence they come. Rather than try to convince others to
change their beliefs, it is important to value those differences.
DIRECTIONS TO STUDENTS
Write a short comparison essay on the relationship of “home remedies” and modern medical treatments. Include at least
3 common ailments with appropriate medical treatment and a corresponding home remedy. (i.e. headache treated with
massage as a home remedy versus aspirin in medical treatment). Include in the narrative the advantages and
disadvantages of using each home remedy.
EVALUATION CRITERIA
You must score a 3 or 4 on the scenario in order to pass this portion of the assessment.
