Yellow Fever and Vaccination
You have agreed to attend Sunnyside Medical Centre for a Travel Risk Assessment and guidance on
Yellow Fever requirements. A Travel Health questionnaire MUST be completed in advance of your
appointment time and is available at reception or on our website.
Yellow Fever is a serious illness transmitted via mosquito bites. It is mainly limited to some parts of
Africa and, Central and South America. A Yellow Fever Vaccination can offer nearly 100% protection and
gives at least 10 years protection against disease. Some countries will require a yellow fever vaccination
and certificate of vaccination (YFVC), even if there is no risk of disease in that country. This is to
minimise spread of the disease and is an International Health Regulation set by that country and not the
UK.
In certain circumstances an exemption on medical grounds can be authorised and an exemption certificate
can be given. Only a Yellow Fever Registered Centre can give vaccination or issue exemption certificates.
Yellow Fever vaccination and/ or issue of certificates are not available under the NHS.

When vaccines cannot be given:You CANNOT receive yellow fever vaccine if you have any of the following:History of anaphylaxis or severe allergy to eggs.
History of Thymus disorder (Myasthenia Gravis, Thymusectomy, Thymoma, Di-George Syndrome,
chemotherapy or radium damage to the thymus).
Previous severe reaction to Yellow Fever Vaccination.
You are under 6 months old.
Severely Immunocompromised patients.
YOU WILL BE ISSUED WITH A MEDICAL EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE and given guidance on
other measures to protect your health during travel at the consultation with the Practice Nurse.
The following are PRECAUTIONS and you CAN sometimes receive the vaccine depending on the
TRAVEL RISK ASSESSMENT and the potential risks for you as an individual.
Over 60 years old
Between 6 and 9 months old
Pregnancy
Breast Feeding
Stable Immunocompromised Patients (past chemotherapy, Rheumatoid, HIV etc)
YOU MAY BE ISSUED WITH A VACCINATION OR AN EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE during your
consultation with the Practice Nurse after full discussion and consent.
Yellow Fever is a live attenuated vaccine and other live vaccines should be given, if possible, 4 weeks
apart. The timescale can be reduced but there maybe a less than optimum response from the second
vaccination.
WHAT TO EXPECT FOLLOWING VACCINATION:All vaccines including Yellow Fever have potential side effects.
Usual side effects that are common following vaccination are:Soreness at injection site with mild inflammation
Slight temperature
Muscles aches.
These will be helped with fluids and analgesia and most commonly occur up to10 days after vaccination.
More severe reactions are extremely rare:Meningocephalitis was reported in 1950s following vaccination in 26 cases. 15 were in patients with
thymus disorder or babies under 6 months. Since the 1960s patients in these groups are no longer
vaccinated and the cases of meningocephalitis have declined. There is still a VERY SMALL risk of
adverse effect. The risk is greater in the over 60s.
It is worth remembering up to 25% of yellow fever infection cases become life threatening. There have
been reported cases, all fatal, in unvaccinated travelers.
The nurse will risk assess patients individually dependent on travel location, season, travel itinery, and,
health and age of patient. The nurses at Sunnyside have received special training to give Yellow Fever
Vaccine provided by the National Travel Health Network and Centre in London (NATHNAC).
