With a valuable and large collection of peer-reviewed full-text journals, Academic Search Premier offers critical information from many sources and contains scholarly collections with full-text coverage for nearly all academic areas of study. There is also coverage of the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and The Christian Science Monitor, but these newspapers on this databases are not full-text. The date range for this database is generally 1975-present so it is not suitable for older materials. . The databases extends from 1954-present. Titles published since 1997 are available in PDF digital full text format by requesting a free download, and 24 page previews are also available. 3 Public Affairs Information Service Bulletin (PAIS) 1945-present, located on the second floor balcony. Contains abstracts of political science and news materials. Since 1991, it has been called PAIS International. Rowan only has volumes since 1964. Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature A source best for general and popular literature, 1890-present. Full text of articles is available electronically for 1993-present. Bibliographical references for the years 1890-1983 are in the bound volumes in the section marked Indexes on the compact shelving on the first floor. Volumes for 1984-present are located in Room 219. GPO Look under “Databases and Indexes” on the Library web page http://www.rowan.edu/library//databases/index.htm Excellent bibliographical source for U.S government documents issued since 1976. Many of the actual documents can be fund in the Government Documents Room in the rear of the second floor or consult the documents librarian. For earlier government materials, see the Monthly Catalog in the Government Documents Room. Writings of American History, 1902-1975. An author and subject index to books and periodical articles. (Volumes for 1904-05 and 1941-47 were never published.) This is not available at Rowan, but Rutgers-Camden has most annual issues. (Ref. Z1236.L331) NEWSPAPERS The New York Times 1851+ (New York Times Historical) Look under “Databases and Indexes” on the Library web page http://www.rowan.edu/library/digital_library.htm The entire run of this newspaper is now available online. Rowan also has microfilm copies as well as a printed index to the paper. The (London) Times, 1785-1980 The Campbell Library has microfilm of this newspaper for the appropriate years. Printed indices of the newspaper articles are either in Rm. 219 or on the movable shelves on the ground floor. For the earlier years, it is called Palmer’s Index. Christian Science Monitor Index, 1987+. (NewsBank) The Rowan Library has the newspaper itself on microfilm from 1959+. It also is available electronically on the library NewsBank website. A published index, 19591975, is on the collapsible shelving on Level 1. Washington Post, 1977+ (NewsBank) Rowan also has the last few decades of this paper on microfilm. Wall Street Journal, 1887+ (Wall Street Journal Historical) The complete run of this paper since its inception is now available online. Rowan also has the last few decades of this paper on microfilm. 4 U. S. GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS The Campbell Library has a fairly good collection of government documents, but you have may have to consult other depositories for some materials. Rowan has been a government depository since 1968. For earlier periods, the main branch of the Free Library in Philadelphia on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway may be a better source because it has been an official government depository since the first decades of the 20th century. Garraty, John, general editor American National Biography 24 vols. and 1 supplement. Comprehensive, but only contains deceased individuals. Ref. E176.A655 Wilson, James Grant and John Fiske, eds. Appleton’s Cyclopedia of American Biography 7 vols. Nineteenth century native and naturalized citizens. Individuals are listed chronologically under family names. This series, which stops in 1900, was not completely accurate, for some fictionalized biographies slipped in. Electronically online and printed in Library Room 218 Biography and Genealogy Index 1946+. Annually. Contains biographical material including obituaries, references to collections of letters, diaries, memoirs, and book reviews. It is indexed by name as well as by profession and occupation. From 1975 to the present, it is available online under Databases and Indexes. Ref. E176.D56 Johnson, Allen, and Dumas Malone, eds. Dictionary of American Biography 22 vols. + supplements. Authoritative and well written, it contains 18,100 sketches of important Americans in all. The series was published from 19281936, with occasional supplements from 1944-1988. No living Americans were included at the time of publication. Ref. E176.N281x National Cyclopedia of American Biography 49 vols. + 7 supplements The original series contained primarily figures from the nineteenth century and earlier. The supplements, which began in 1930 and continued to 1964, included living individuals. Ref. E176.C993 The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans 10 vols. Published at the beginning of the century, it sketches 18th and 19th 5 century figures. Ref. CT100.C8 Current Biography 1940+. Annually. This contains extensive biographical sketches of persons of various nationalities, professions and occupations who are prominent in their fields. Cumulative indices are issued from time to time. Ref.
