This unit standard is intended for people who are working under limited supervision in a livestock farming workplace and relates to the knowledge and skills required to assist with livestock parturition.

Explanatory notes

1 Examples of reproductive health risks include metabolic diseases, physical damage to livestock and infection.

2 Demonstrate understanding may be assessed in a number of ways, which could include ability to complete practical tasks, if it is clear that the understanding is essential underpinning knowledge to the task/s, and that the task/s could not be completed without the candidate having that knowledge.

3 Performance of all aspects of this unit standard should comply with the Welfare Code relevant to the type of livestock with which the candidate is involved, Health and

Safety in Employment Act 1992, sustainable practices, and on farm procedures.

4 For Outcome 2 learners in the sheep, beef, dairy and goat contexts must be able to demonstrate their ability to assist an animal to give birth.

Identifies the sequence, physical changes and behavioural signs of parturition.

Identifies dams experiencing parturition difficulties and takes appropriate action.

Monitors health of dam and offspring and takes appropriate action.

2.4 Demonstrates understanding of the role of colostrum in offspring health.

Assist with moving and handling livestock during parturition.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Chooses stock handling techniques appropriate for the class and stage of parturition of the livestock being handled or moved.

Outcome 4

Assist with keeping parturition related records.

4.1 Record appropriate parturition information in accordance with workplace procedures.
