INFORMATION FOR THOSE ATTENDING SUMMIT:
1. GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Water Information Summit (WIS) is the flagship conference of the WaterWeb Consortium
(WWCo) which promotes the sharing of information concerning water and the earth’s environment. The
WWCo seeks to create a global community, bringing together educational, governmental, nonprofit, &
commercial entities interested in water research, conservation, and management; linked electronically
via the Internet. WaterWeb’s goals are to advance water related issues, promote the use of quality
information, and share information with water use stakeholders and decision makers. WIS annual
conferences have been held in Florida, Panama, The Netherlands, Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, El
Salvador, Chile, The Dominican Republic and Burkina Faso.
The WIS-14 will take place in Miami Florida, 22-24 October, 2013, at the Florida International
University (FIU), Modesto A. Maidique Campus, MARC Pavilion. The meeting will be hosted by
the FIU Global Water for Sustainability Program (GLOWS) in association with the WaterWeb
Consortium. The program agenda is coming soon.

4. AIRPORTS
There are two international airports in the Miami- Ft. Lauderdale area: Miami International Airport and
Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. We highly recommend flying into Miami International
Airport, since this airport is located very close to both the Florida International University and is near
the recommended hotel.

5. WEATHER
The temperatures in Miami, Florida towards the end of October range between 85°F (30°C) during the
day and 72°F (22°C) in the evening. Showers are common, but mainly during the afternoon.

The event will be held at Florida International University, Modesto A. Maidique Campus at the

7. REGISTRATION

8. PARKING
For those who are either driving their cars or are renting a car (see item number 16 for more
information), there are two parking garages (GOLD and BLUE) that are near the MARC Pavilion (see
map). You will find parking meters in the first floor of both garages. Please park only in the designated
visitor areas on the first floor of both garages.
You can also get a parking pass from the Visitor Information Center (VIC). The VIC provides
motorist assistance, maps, directions, and information to assist FIU visitors navigate around the campus,
such as information on daily events and parking meter locations. The Visitor Information Center
(VIC), operated by the Department of Parking and Transportation, is located on the North side of
the campus at the intersection of SW 112 Avenue and SW 8 Street. If you would like to contact the VIC,

MEETINGS
9. INTERNET AND WI-FI
Wireless Internet access will be available to visitors on campus via the FIU_WiFi wireless network.
Users must create a Guest ID and password to login to the FIU_WiFi network. Once registered, the
Guest ID and password will be the same to log-in your other devices. Please note users must accept the
User Acceptance Agreement to get access to the internet. The Guest ID is available for 24 hours.

10. POSTER SESSION FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS
There will be a poster session for selected graduate students in the lobby of the MARC building. Please
contact wis14_glows@globalwaters.net for any questions regarding this matter. Applications fora and

11. NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES
There will be a total of five networking opportunities during the course of the conference. Coffee and tea
will be served.
12. LUNCH ON YOUR OWN
WIS and FIU will not provide lunch for this event. However, there are multiple places to eat on campus
that are in close-proximity to the venue. We recommend the Ernest R. Graham Center (GC) a two
minute walk from the MARC building. The Graham Center offers a variety of inexpensive restaurants
and fast-food dining. These places accept cash and credit cards.
Chili’s Too: Chili’s restaurant located in the heart of the Graham Center, offers Sandwiches, burgers,
salads, fajitas, the famous baby back ribs and many more. You can grab a quick lunch and sit outside
where there is a nice view

13. RECEPTION:
There will be a reception in the evening of October 22 following the completion of the first day of the
summit at the Faculty Club located on ground floor of the Graham Center. Light refreshments and
appetizers will be served. We invite our participants to come and socialize with other guests and
network and meet invited guests.

between the hours of 9 am to 5 pm EST Monday thru Friday. Please reference in the subject and
email context GLOWS-FIU Water Information Summit event. Also reference the confirmed set
rate of $89 in the email context.
A set GLOWS-FIU rate of $89 plus 13% tax per room will be applied to those who confirm a
reservation before October 20, 2013.
This hotel is located 10 minutes from Miami International airport. Free transportation to and from
Miami International airport is provided between 4 AM to 2 AM daily, please call the hotel to make these
arrangements. Average taxi cost from Miami International airport to Coral Gables area ranges from $18$20 each way.
The hotel has a restaurant on premises serving breakfast, lunch and dinner at moderate prices. Parking is
free of charge and free internet is also available throughout the hotel.
This hotel is highly recommended since it is located walking distance to Miracle Mile area, where you
will find boutiques, a large number of restaurants and cafes. There is also a free Coral Gables Trolley
that picks you up across the street from the hotel and takes you directly to Miracle Mile. This trolley
runs Monday to Friday, 6:30 AM to 8 PM. For more information about the different restaurants and

16. CAR RENTAL
If you are planning on renting a car for the duration of the WIS event, you can make arrangements ahead

17. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
There are a number of options to get from Coral Gables to the venue at Florida International University.
Metrobus: If you are staying in the Coral Gables (Miracle Mile area), there is a bus that takes you
directly to FIU. The bus picks you up in Coral Way and Le June and drops you off at FIU Modesto A.
