LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2012 ALPHA OMEGA-ESA SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship award is a gift from the Alpha Omega of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority of Scott City, Kansas; and as a sacred trust, is used for students who maintain a high scholastic standing and who could not attend college without financial assistance. In addition: *This scholarship is typically awarded to several students in the amount of $500 (subject to change). *The recipient must be a graduate of SCHS. *The recipient must attend a Kansas College or Technical School. *No outreach student will be considered. *This scholarship is also available to students who have previously graduated from SCHS and are currently attending a Kansas College or Technical School. AMERICAN LEGION-LESTER REID POST 183 SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship award is a gift from the American Legion-Lester Reid Post 183 of Scott City, Kansas; and will be awarded to one graduating senior student. This scholarship amount is subject to change due to the stock market; however, it is expected to be worth $1000 this year. Applicants must have a family member—mother, father, brother, sister, or grandparent that has served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. A copy of an honorable discharge or form DD214 is required. HILDRED & RAYMOND ARMANTROUT SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship award is a gift from the Hildred and Raymond Armantrout Memorial Fund. This is a $4000 scholarship in which $2000 will be paid prior to August 15 of the freshmen year, and $2000 will be paid prior to August 15 of the sophomore year; subject to the student maintaining a “B” average their freshman year. *The applicant must be a student in good standing and enrolled in a full-time capacity as a senior at Scott Community High School. *The applicant must complete the application in full and as requested. *The applicant must be in the top 1/3 of his/her class. *The applicant may choose to attend any institution of higher education accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education and may major in any area of study that leads to an undergraduate degree in an academic field. *The Selection Committee will consist of the following individuals: SCHS Counselor, SCHS Principal, 2 SCHS Faculty Members, and 3 members of the community who have been selected by the High School Faculty Members. The Armantrout family is in no way involved in the selection each year. *The Selection Committee will base its selections on a combination of financial need, test scores and grades, and their perception of the applicant’s ability to successfully complete 4 years of post-secondary education in an academic field. DARLOW BOULWARE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship award is a gift from the Darlow Boulware Memorial Fund. This is a $200 scholarship which is available to any SCHS graduating senior who plans to attend a post secondary school. To apply for this scholarship, the senior is asked to complete the application in full, write a brief essay as described in the application, and include a list of 3 references. DOORNBOS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship award is a gift from the Doornbos Family of Scott City, Kansas. This is a $1000 scholarship which is available to any SCHS student who has applied for admission to Kansas State University. There is no formal application to be filled out. The scholarship department at KSU will select the winner of the Doornbos Scholarship based on the criteria set forth by the family. KSU will notify the school counselor when they have selected the winner. FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF SCOTT CITY SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is a gift from the First National Bank of Scott City. The bank will award 4 scholarships in the amount of $250 each to any SCHS graduating senior that is planning to attend a post secondary school. This scholarship is completely objective in the fact that the applicant does not, in any way, identify him/her self on the application. The applicant will put only his/her social security number and packet number on the application. The selection committee will then select their winner based on how well the applicant was able to “sell” him/her self. The selection committee will then contact the school counselor, tell her the social security numbers/packet numbers they have chosen as winners, and the counselor will then tell the selection committee who the winners are. PHYLLIS KAMP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is a gift from the family of Phyllis Kamp, a former school teacher. This is a $1000 scholarship available to any Scott Community High School graduating senior who plans to attend a post secondary school and major in Education. To apply for this scholarship, the senior is asked to complete the application, write a brief essay, and include a list of three references. LAKE SCOTT CAR CLUB SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship award is a gift from the Lake Scott Car Club. This scholarship is available to any senior student that is planning to attend any post-secondary school to pursue a career in any automotive field. The amount of this scholarship is subject to change each year (up to $1000), as is the number of scholarships awarded. This scholarship can be re-applied for each year the applicant is still in college working toward the certificate or degree in an automotive field. Should you be selected for a scholarship, the club would like for you to come back and talk to the club about your educational experience and what your plans are once you have earned your certificate or degree in the automotive industry. MASONIC LODGE SCHOLARSHIP This is a scholarship essay contest that is sponsored by the local Masonic Lodge. Each year, the Grand Lodge of AF & AM of Kansas selects an essay topic for students to respond to. It is available to all junior and senior students enrolled in a Kansas public high school. The local Masonic Lodge selects its local winner and awards that student with a scholarship in the amount of $350. The winning essay is then sent in to the state where it is eligible to compete for scholarships in the amount of $2000, $1500, $1000, and $500. Essays must first win the local competition before they can be submitted for state competition. This scholarship is presented in the fall semester of each year, with the local entry deadline being November 1st of each year. The winning essay must be postmarked to the state no later than December 1st. The Grand Lodge essay winners will be notified prior to March 1st each year. AVIS MURPHY MEMORIAL FARM BUREAU SCHOLARSHIP The $250 Avis Murphy Memorial Farm Bureau Scholarship is available to any Scott Community High School graduating senior who plans to attend a post secondary school. Preference MAY be given to a student entering an Agricultural related profession. The senior is asked to complete the application in full, write a brief essay, and include a list of 3 references. GLENN NOVAK SCHOLARSHIP This is a $500 scholarship available to one student who is planning to attend any post secondary school with the intent of obtaining a degree in an agricultural or animal science related field. The student must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 on a 4.00 scale. A committee of community volunteers will recommend the scholarship recipient. Selection criteria includes academic achievement, academic and college major goals, community involvement, and high school involvement. PEO CHAPTER AW OF SCOTT COUNTY This scholarship award is a gift from the PEO Chapter AW of Scott County and is available to females only. The amount of the scholarship will vary from $100 to $500, and Chapter AW may choose NOT to award any scholarships; or it may award more than one scholarship, depending upon various circumstances each year. The scholarship committee may choose to include an interview in the selection process. The scholarship may be used to attend any school of higher education. The following requirements must also be met: *Must be female. *Must be a SCHS Senior or the daughter of a member of Chapter AW. *Must have a 3.00 GPA for the past two years of school. *Must be enrolled in 12 college hours or more (full-time student) next year. *Must complete the application as requested. SCOTT CITY FFA SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is available to any SCHS senior who is a FFA member in the Scott City Chapter, and is currently enrolled in an AG-ED course. Students applying must plan to attend a University, Junior College, or Vocational-Technical School in the school year following graduation. You do NOT have to major in agriculture to receive this scholarship. The amount of this scholarship is $500 and the number awarded will be determined by the number of eligible applicants. Typed applications will be given priority. SCOTT CITY MUSIC CLUB SCHOLARSHIP These scholarships are available to any senior who is planning to pursue a degree in music. Interested students are asked to write a letter to the Music Club in which they provide answers to the questions that are requested on the scholarship application. These scholarships are renewable each year the student is in college, provided they reapply. These scholarships are also available to students from neighboring communities that have a music teacher that is a member of the Scott City Music Club. The Music Club will also nominate a recipient for the Ruby Wilkens Music Scholarship worth $500 based on the same application. SCOTT CITY QUILT GUILD SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is a gift from the Scott City Quilt Guild and is available to a Scott Community High School graduating senior who plans to further their education. This is a $250 scholarship that is provided for, but not limited to a student with a desire to enter a textile type career. To apply for this scholarship, the student is asked to complete the application in full, write a brief essay, and include a list of 3 references. (The number of scholarships and dollar amount is subject to change from year to year). There will be 8 scholarships awarded this year (each worth $250 and you will also receive a beautiful hand made quilt from the Quilt Guild). SECURITY STATE BANK SCHOLARSHIP (#1) The local Security State Bank will award 3 scholarships in the amount of $500. This scholarship is based primarily on community service. Applications must be completed as requested. Three letters of recommendation are required with this scholarship. SECURITY STATE BANK SCHOLARSHIP DRAWING (#3) The local Security State Bank will award 2 scholarships in the amount of $250 in a random drawing of all completed questionnaires. These scholarships are available to seniors who will be completing any type of additional schooling after high school. In order to be eligible for one of these scholarships, simply complete the questionnaire in its entirety and return to Mrs. Wilkinson. VFW POST 7773 SCHOLARSHIP The local VFW Post #7773 will award one scholarship in the amount of $1600 ($400 payable per year for 4 years of college) to a senior student at SCHS that has a family member who served in the United States Military and was/is a member of the VFW organization. Applications must be completed as requested, and those that include a copy of Form DD214 showing enlistment and discharge dates will be given priority. XI DELTA KAPPA SORORITY SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship award is a gift from the XI Delta Kappa Sorority of Scott City. This is a $250 scholarship which is available to any SCHS graduating senior (male or female) who plans to attend a post secondary school. To apply for this scholarship, the senior is asked to complete the application in full. Southwest Kansas Scholarship Program You all need to go to the website www.communityfoundationswks.com and apply for these scholarship. The Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas Scholarship Program reflects a direct effort to recognize and reward those students who have demonstrated consistent and outstanding academic achievement in high school and college and tend to be a worthy student of good character. For a student to be eligible to receive a scholarship award, they must be enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited institution. Scholarship applications are available each year on February 1. The deadline to return the application is March 15, with notification being given to those receiving awards by May 1. A scholarship committee of local people who have knowledge of financial aid and scholarship programs, study all the applications and make recommendations to the Board for those qualified to receive scholarship funds. Some scholarship areas covered are education, medical, music, agribusiness, photography, and graphic arts, which can be used by recipients from certain areas, cities, and states. An average of 30 to 35 different colleges are attended each year.
