Angus Downie 1943 – 2010
The Award commemorates the work of journalist, author and rights activist the late
Angus Downie who wrote for The Mercury, The Examiner, numerous interstate and
overseas publications and the now defunct Nation Review.
Among his many awards and achievements were the 1968 inaugural Young
Australian of the Year Award (for writing), the inaugural 1977 Tasmanian Journalist of
the Year and an AM in 1994.
Angus was a passionate advocate for the rights of people with disability in particular
and in 2002 received an award from the Australian Human Rights Commission for his
work on the development of the Transport Standards for accessible public transport.
Eligibility
This award will recognise the work of an individual, individuals or organisation that
has been published in any Tasmanian print newspaper or magazine.
To be eligible for nomination, the article or article series should make an outstanding
contribution to the understanding, promotion or protection of human rights in
Tasmania in at least one of the following ways and have been published between
30 September 2014 and 30 September 2015:

investigating and reporting on injustice or inequality in Tasmania;

encouraging the promotion of rights and inclusion for people with disability in
Tasmania;

encouraging action to overcome discrimination or infringements of human rights in
Tasmania; and

encouraging greater understanding of and respect for diversity in Tasmania
The winner will receive a certificate and $500 at the award conferring ceremony
during Human Rights Week.

Nominations close 5:00 pm on Wednesday 30 September 2015. Nominations are
to be sent, preferably by e-mail, to HRWTasmania@gmail.com, otherwise by mail
