requires approximately 1000 pages of reading over the number of weeks in the semester. This
means 125 pages in an 8 week class and 65 pages in a 16 week class. Students will be
responsible for all information presented in required reading material.
All written assignments are designed to enhance the student's writing skills and critical thinking
skills by analyzing concepts discussed in the course. All written assignments must be created in
Office suite applications.
SYLLABI DISCLAIMER:
This syllabus may be changed at the discretion of the instructor but adequate time will be
provided before any changes are made.
HCC PORTAL
Just a reminder that to access Blackboard, IRIS, and your Heartland Student Email, you will
need to log into myHeartland, at https://my.heartland.edu.
Homework:
The assigned labs may be found in the instruction section located in Blackboard.
Preparation for class and written assignments is vital for the successful completion
of this course. Each student will be expected to have completed the reading and
homework assignment by the scheduled dates to prepare for examinations.
The student will upload the homework into Blackboard by the due dates where the instructor
can view the work for each student. 10 points per chapter will be given to encourage
students to have homework completed by the designated dates. The points will be given for
uploading the attempted homework and will not be graded for accuracy. The examination
will test the understanding of the material.
Your instructor will be monitoring your work in this course and will contact you, the student,
to see if he can help you in any way. It is the responsibility of the student to post questions in
the discussion boards or email the instructor about any material that is not understood so that
the instructor and other online community participants may help provide feedback. The
successful completion of this course is a shared responsibility of both the student and the
instructor. Good communication is the key to this success.
Participation (or Attendance):
All students are expected to follow the class schedule, which is part of this syllabus.
Incompletes:
An incomplete grade may be given to a student who, by the withdrawal date can reasonably
be expected to pass the course. Incompletes may be granted only when justified by extreme
circumstances. Incomplete grades are not given for such reasons as unjustified failure to
appear for the final examination. A written agreement, outline the requirements to be met,
must be signed by the instructor and the student. The agreed upon requirements must be
completed no later than the end of the following semester. By the agreed upon date, the
instructor will assign a grade or the incomplete will be changed to an ‘F’ if the requirements
are not completed.
ADMINISTRATIVE DROPS:
The instructor reserves the right to administratively drop a student from this course when the
student can no longer accumulate enough points to pass the course.
Make-up of tests and assignments:
All written assignments, including labs and projects, must be turned in by the dates
scheduled. Late assignments will not be accepted and the student will receive a grade of zero
points if the assignments are not turned in on time. Students are responsible for all of the
material covered in this course. In addition, there will be no makeup exams. Should you
have a legitimate scheduling conflict, the instructor will make every effort to accommodate
your needs provided you communicate this ahead of time.
Deadlines:
All assignments will be given a deadline date as outlined in the syllabus calendar of events.
There will be no exceptions for late assignments.
Student Conduct:
Students should conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. Students causing
problems in the classroom may be dropped from the course at the discretion of the instructor.
Academic Integrity and Plagiarism
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a fundamental principle of collegial life at Heartland Community
College and is essential to the credibility of the College’s educational programs. Moreover,
because grading may be competitive, students who misrepresent their academic work violate
the right of their fellow students. The College, therefore, views any act of academic dishonest
as a serious offense requiring disciplinary measures, including course failure, suspension, and
even expulsion from the College. In addition, an act of academic dishonesty may have
unforeseen effects far beyond any officially imposed penalties.
Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to cheating, aiding or suborning
cheating or other acts of academic dishonesty, plagiarism, misrepresentation of data,
falsification of academic records or documents and unauthorized access to computerized
academic or administrative records or systems. Definitions of these violations may be found
in the college catalog.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the presenting of others’ ideas as if they were your own. When you write a
paper, create a project, do a presentation or create anything original, it is assumed that all the
work, except for that which is attributed to another author or creator, is your own. Plagiarism
is considered a serious academic offense and may take the following forms:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Copying word-for-word from another source and not giving that source credit.
Paraphrasing the work of another and not giving that source credit.
Adopting a particularly apt phrase as your own
Using an image or a copy of an image without crediting its source
Paraphrasing someone else’s line of thinking in the development of a topic as if it
were your own.
Receiving excessive help from a friend or elsewhere, or using another project as
if it were your own.
Note that word-for-word copying is not the only form of plagiarism. The penalties for
plagiarism may be severe, ranging from failure on the particular piece of work, failure in the
course or expulsion from school in extreme cases.
