MENG-244 Course Description MENG 244 Fundamentals of Thermodynamics Year and Semester : 2, Spring 2008-09 Credit Hour : (4,1) 4 Pre/Corequisite(s) : PHYS102 Catalog Description: Basic concepts and definitions of thermodynamics. Properties of pure substances. The first law of thermodynamics for the closed and open systems. The second law of thermodynamics. Entropy as a property. Brayton cycle (gas power cycle). Rankine cycle (steam power cycle). Refrigeration cycles. Prerequisite by Topics: The subjects related to thermodynamics and heat from PHYS 102 course. Textbook Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach, Cengel and Boles, McGraw-Hill, 6th Edition 2008 Reference Books In the library, there are many thermodynamics books that can be used as reference books. Course Objectives: The students who successfully fulfill the course requirements will: Understand the system concept, Gain knowledge about the systems (open system, closed system), Gain ability to apply the first law and second law to the systems. Course Outline: Week 1-2 Introduction to Thermodynamics (2 weeks) Basic concept of thermodynamics, Definition of the terms, Dimensions and units, forms of energy, pressure, and temperature. Week 3 Properties of Pure Substance (1 week) Phase change process, Property Tables, Ideal gas equation of state. Week 4-5 The First Law of Thermodynamics: Closed System (2 weeks) Energy transfers: heat and work, Energy conservation principle. Week 6-7 The Fist Law of Thermodynamics: Open System (2 weeks) Mass balance, and energy balance equations. Energy transferred by mass. Steady state energy conservation equation, steady-flow engineering devices: compressor, turbine, nozzles, heat exchangers, mixing chambers, pipe, throttling valve. Week 12-13 Gas Power Cycles (2 weeks) Brayton Cycle Week 14-15 Vapor Power Cycles (2 weeks) Rankine Cycle (steam power cycle) Computer Usage: In some homework, students may need to write small programs. Teaching Techniques: Student will attend lab. Three or four experiments will be done, and student will write a report for each experiment.
