Activities to accompany sight word books
School/Animal sight word book:
Vocabulary : dog, fish, pig, hippopotamus, rabbit, worm, lizard
Can your child label the other animals in the book?
*Describe each animal (ex. A pig is a pink animal that is big and has a small tail. It can be found on a farm and say “oink”.)
Concepts : big/small, tall/short, open/close, inside, next to
Look through the book see if your child can identify these concepts in the picture.
Language : Use picture symbols, signs, communication device or verbalization
(modeling an adult) to create simple sentences. (i.e., I see a ___, The ___is on a ___, etc.)
Ask Wh questions about the book. “Where is the dog sitting?” – at a desk.
Bounce- I see sight word book:
Vocabulary : colors, ball
Language : Have your child color the pictures to match the sentence.
Discuss the things you can do with a ball.
Use picture symbols, signs, communication device or verbalization (modeling an adult) to recreate the I see a (color) ball sentences.
Create sentences using the word bounce: I bounce the ball. Mom bounces the ball. We bounce the ball. The ball bounces up and down.
I am sight word book:
Vocabulary : Dog, bone, mouse, cheese, bear, honey, rabbit, carrot
Can your child match the object to the animal before reading the book?
Describe each animal or object and have your child identify which animal/object you are describing.
Language : Use picture symbols, signs, communication device or verbalization (modeling an adult) to recreate sentences I am… and I like…
Can your child create a new sentence with I am… and I like…?
Make sentences with “It is a dog”, “It is a bone.”.
I am an artist sight word book:
Vocabulary : artist, color, cut, glue, draw, paint
Discuss an artist prior to reading the book.
Discuss the object used to do each of the action word: We cut with ____, we draw with___.
Language : Use picture symbols, signs, communication device or verbalization (modeling an adult) to recreate sentences I like to… Have your child make a sentence to tell you what he/she likes to do at school.
Create sentences: I am… I am a boy, I am a son, I am a student, etc.
I can sight word book:
Vocabulary : dog, bird, fish, frog, kangaroo, boy, girl, run, fly, swim, hop, jump, read
Can your child match the action to the animal. (i.e. A dog___. A bird ___).
Practice signing the animal and action words
Language : Use picture symbols, signs, communication device or verbalization (modeling an adult) to recreate sentences I am a dog. I can run. Etc.
Make new sentences using different animals or people (i.e., I am a snake. I can slither.)
Make sentences using the animal sounds. (i.e., I am a dog. I can bark.)
Describe the animal and see if your child can identify which animal you are describing.
I go sight word book:
Vocabulary : go, store, sleep
Where would we go to buy toys? What store would we go to buy French fries?
Can your child recognize any of the store names? Can your child find the signs as you are driving around town?
Language
: Create sentences “I go to “. Think of 2 additional sentences to make (i.e., I go to school. I go to grandma’s house.”)
Ask “What do you do at_____?”: school, zoo, park, etc.
Ask “Where do you find a ___:”: teacher, lion, swingset, hamburger,etc.
