Wed, 29th – Get to know you survey. Heads up: Bring materials next class (binder,
paper, pen/pencil, netbook).
Thur, 30th – Syllabus, faculty website, google accounts, edmodo, grammar pre-test.
HW: edmodo writing assignment, vocabulary journal
SEPTEMBER
Wed, 5th – Assign vocabulary journal, begin lesson on “satire”: brainstorm/writing
prompt for common elements of fairy tales, read fairytale and find elements.
Thurs, 6th - Review notes and elements of fairy tales in Beauty and the Beast, define
satire, view examples (Shrek), continue to work with definition, use edmodo
interactives, introduce web resources. In groups: pass in a plot diagram and a
character map by the end of class. If time, find 4 possible places in fairytale for using
the techniques of satire.
Mon, 10th – Review satire including 4 techniques, especially the comment or
criticism satire makes. Brainstorm good satire. Give time to complete plot diagrams
and character maps, find 4 places where satire can be applied (one technique each)
– remind students to use their notes. Show web resource for rubric. Groups must
produce an outline and/or a summary (can be plot and character diagrams).
Wed, 12th - Review: what is satire? What makes good satire? Homework share:
satire examples. Check vocabulary journal, discuss example from “mean girls”, read
example of Cinderella re-written for satire.
Thur, 13th – Work Day for narratives (pass out rubric). Due Monday!
Substitute: Mon, 17th – Final work day for narratives.
Wed, 19th – Narratives Due. Heads up on NWEA testing
Thur, 20th – NWEA / READING
Mon, 24th – Finish group presentations, pass back papers, satire quiz on Thursday!
Reminder: vocab due Wed (4 words total), heads up: all late work must be in by
Wed – progress reports coming out soon.
Wed 26th – Vocabulary journals due, Gradebook closes today!, Spelling Bee, HW:
study for satire quiz on Thursday!
Thur, 27th – Finish spelling Bee, satire quiz, personal reflection, Fairy tales vs.
Disney – How does literature reflect and perpetuate historical and cultural ideals?
Re word in groups, web resource, compare/contrast chart. HW: Read one fairy tale
and fill in the compare/contrast graphic organizer.
OCTOBER
Mon, 1st – Check homework, remind about vocab due on Wed, make plot diagram
for stories (add to notes), assign second story (Sow Drop).
Wed, 3rd – Vocab journals due, Spelling Bee, reminder about Snow Drop.
Thur, 4th – Pop quiz over Snow Drop, Plot Diagram for The Crystal Casket, give
students time to fill in Snow Drop compare/contrast.
Wed, 10th – Vocab journal due, completed compare/contrast charts due by end of
week! Reminder of Essential questions (notes). Fix essay mess-up: Read silently
(essay) and annotate (take notes) – finish for HW! Spelling Bee Words!!
Thur, 11th – Return to notes and discuss essential question: use compare/contrast
chart to brainstorm archetypes. Archetype handout. Have students use handout to
chart a movie or novel – think pair share. Collect compare/contrast chart. Begin to
watch Snow White.
Mon, 15th – Seating Chart! Collect Disney essay, writing prompt, reminders on
vocab journal and spelling bee words. Revisit essential question. Revisit essential
question – have the lessons changed? Have the values? If not these then the
depictions? Heads up: Snow White and Huntsman on Thursday
Explain differences between on demand writing and formal writing: Consider
the similarities and differences between the original versions of Snow White
and the Disney version? In what ways did Disney remove the “darkness” of the
original versions? In what ways did they stay true to the original versions?
WHY do you think Disney adapted the story this way?
Wed, 17th – Vocab journals due, Spelling Bee, begin Snow White and the Huntsman.
Thur, 18th – Continue Snow White (ended at the morning scene in fairy glen)…
Mon, 22 - Update about grades – reminder about two weeks to make up missing
work when absent. ALWAYS check IC and daily agenda on faculty website! Finish
Snow White…
Mon, 22nd – Finish Snow White. GRADES.
Substitute: Wed, 24th - Writing Prompt:
20 min.
How does this version of Snow White differ from the Disney version? Why do
you think Hollywood re-made this movie? Is our society/culture “ready” for this
darker version? Why? What has changed in the last 70 years in our culture?
Which version better represents America now? Why?
Thur, 25th – Using the purple Glencoe World Literature textbooks, students
completed a Greek Drama reading guide. HW: Complete survey…finish any and all
late work! Grades close Monday.
Mon, 29th – Go over reading guide answers, self correct and score. HW: study guide
– quiz on Thursday! Begin reading Oedipus (stopped when chorus entered).
Wed, 31st – Spelling Bee!
NOVEMBER
Thur, 1st – Reminder about reading guide quiz on Monday. Continue reading
Oedipus. Introduce Active reading strategies: character sheet for Oedipus (six boxes
completed by end of class). Keep track in notes about modern/ancient ideas. Think,
pair, share: groups summarize sections of text and present them to the class. HW:
Edmodo prompt. Spelling Bee every other week, can submit spelling test for credit.
Mon, 5th – Reading Guide Quiz! Read to page 295.
Substitute: Thurs, 8th – Finish Part II or Oedipus and complete the reading
questions at the end of the section.
Wed, 14th – Continue reading Oedipus, add to character chart, brainstorm with class
ideas for ancient/modern notes. Spelling Bee!
Thur, 15th – Complete Oedipus, summarize end of play and answer questions:
Recall 1-5 and Literary Elements 1-2, mask activity with partners if time.

Mon, 26th – Oedipus review: Soundtrack and Chronology activity. Test on
Thursday!
Thur, 29th – Oedipus Test, word search, vote on skills for rest of second quarter,
reflection…
DECEMBER
Mon, 3rd – Writing Workshop!! Norms for workshop, student created and posted:
ways in which one adds to class, and ways in which one detracts from class.
Consequences discussed and posted!
Wed, 5th – Review norms. Structure of workshop: goal, reflection, feedback.
Workshop 1: Thesis statements: brainstorm, notes taken, practice activity, word
search. Goal: To understand what a thesis statement is, where it goes, and howit
functions.
Thur, 6th – Review norms. Goal 2: To know the elements of a strong thesis
statement. Add concise to notes (dissecting every word and its purpose), prepare
the brain activity (riddles), practice writing thesis statements (double sided
handout). In class work: write a rap, poem, paragraph, cheer, etc using 5-7 terms
from word search about thesis statements. HW: word search
Mon, 10th – Substitute: Thesis statements and documentary.
Thur, 13th – Substitute: Thesis statements and documentary.
Wed, 19th – Writing Workshop: Paragraphs and Paragraphing. HW: Write your
paragraph!
Thur, 20th – Share paragraphs, review elements and strategies, paragraph as a class
(topic: movies in the classroom), protocol and expectations for assembly tomorrow.
