Course Description:
This course serves as an introduction to classical Greek texts and aims to develop basic reading and
translating skills. We will read selections from Plato’s Symposium, accompanied by general grammar and
vocabulary review. Class time will be spent mostly on translating and analyzing the grammar of the Greek
text. We will occasionally work on assignments in small groups before going over them with the class as a

Exams and Quizzes:
There will be three tests and four quizzes during the semester. The tests will focus on translation of seen
passages and grammar comprehension. The quizzes will focus on vocabulary and grammar review, but
may also include translation and grammar comprehension questions. The lowest quiz score will be
dropped. The final exam will focus on translation of seen passages and grammar comprehension.
Expectations:
You are expected to attend class daily with all of the assigned reading prepared ahead of time. In class,
please be respectful of others (for the UA policies regarding threatening behavior by students, see
http://policy.web.arizona.edu/threatening-behavior-students). Please come to class on time, turn off cell
phones and other electronic devices, and refrain from behavior that is distracting to the instructor or other
students.
Absence Policies:
Attendance in Greek is crucial. If you must miss class, please let me know ahead of time. Be aware that if
you miss class or come to class late, it is your sole responsibility to find out if you missed something
important. All holidays or special events observed by organized religions will be honored for those
students who show affiliation with that particular religion. Absences pre-approved by the UA Dean of
Students (or Dean’s designee) will also be honored.
Academic Integrity:
Although group work is encouraged in and outside of the Greek classroom, please be aware that you are
responsible for completing your own work in accordance with the UA Code of Academic Integrity (see
http://deanofstudents.arizona.edu/codeofacademicintegrity).
Accessibility and Accommodations:
It is the University’s goal that learning experiences be as accessible as possible. If you anticipate or
experience physical or academic barriers based on disability, please let me know immediately so that we
can discuss options. You are also welcome to contact Disability Resources (520-621-3268) to establish
reasonable accommodations. Please be aware that the accessible table and chairs in this room should
remain available for students who find that standard classroom seating is not usable.
