Email: arkennedy@email.arizona.edu Required Texts: Pratt, ed., Eros at the Banquet: Reviewing Greek with Plato’s Symposium Liddell & Scott, An Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon Smyth, Greek Grammar Course Description: This course serves as an introduction to classical Greek texts and aims to develop basic reading and translating skills. We will read selections from Plato’s Symposium, accompanied by general grammar and vocabulary review. Class time will be spent mostly on translating and analyzing the grammar of the Greek text. We will occasionally work on assignments in small groups before going over them with the class as a whole. Grading: Attendance and In-class Preparation Tests Quizzes Final Exam 20% 45% (15% each) 15% (5% each) 20% Exams and Quizzes: There will be three tests and four quizzes during the semester. The tests will focus on translation of seen passages and grammar comprehension. The quizzes will focus on vocabulary and grammar review, but may also include translation and grammar comprehension questions. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. The final exam will focus on translation of seen passages and grammar comprehension. Expectations: You are expected to attend class daily with all of the assigned reading prepared ahead of time. In class, please be respectful of others (for the UA policies regarding threatening behavior by students, see http://policy.web.arizona.edu/threatening-behavior-students). Please come to class on time, turn off cell phones and other electronic devices, and refrain from behavior that is distracting to the instructor or other students. Absence Policies: Attendance in Greek is crucial. If you must miss class, please let me know ahead of time. Be aware that if you miss class or come to class late, it is your sole responsibility to find out if you missed something important. All holidays or special events observed by organized religions will be honored for those students who show affiliation with that particular religion. Absences pre-approved by the UA Dean of Students (or Dean’s designee) will also be honored.
