D. Devitt/J. Bishop CARRIED 2) APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION that the minutes of the September 18, 2009 meeting be adopted as circulated. J. Bishop/T.Anzai CARRIED 3) BUSINESS ARISING/ACTION ITEMS FROM LAST MINUTES 1 May 8 Arts Curriculum Committee meeting minutes were circulated to the former committee membership for approval on Oct. 6, 2009. Deb Greenfield provided an update regarding the election process. The Terms of Reference will be readdressed at the Oct. 30 Faculty Council Meeting for the necessary amendments so that we can proceed with the elections. CMNS 301 has been included in the 2010-11 academic calendar. Terms of reference were approved with no amendments at the 02 Oct 2009 Faculty Council Meeting but will be readdressed and amended at the Oct. 30 Faculty Council meeting so that we can proceed with the election process. 4) FOR DECISION Jacqueline will continue to serve as interim chair until the formal election of the Chair and Faculty at Large take place at the next meeting. a) Election of Chair – deferred. b) Election of Faculty at Large – deferred. c) Certificate in Extended Studies in Arts: Psychology Honours (W.Podrouzek ) Attachment 3.3.1 Wayne was not present. Joanne Bishop will contact him regarding recommendations for revision of the proposal so that it can move forward in the approval process. d) New Courses i) HIST 460 (R. Anderson) Attachment 4. 4.1 This course has been taught as History 459D and will be offered every 2 years as “HIST 460: State Terror, Human Rights, and the Politics of Memory in Latin America”. The official course outline was reviewed. ACTION: Robin will check with Marlene to determine how this course offering fits into the SFU PDP requirements. Fenwick) Attachment 5, 5.1 2 THEA 250: Introduction to Storytelling is designed to have a strong aboriginal focus and will be taught by a new hire in North American Indigenous Literature and Performance. The following changes were recommended: Learning Outcome: the first point be changed to read “Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1. demonstrate the skills to create and tell stories based on a variety of source material.” Add information about the expected frequency of the course (every second year or every year if it goes well). MOTION to approve the THEA 250 Course Outline with the revisions outlined above. D. Devitt/T. Anzai CARRIED e) BFA Program: Addition of Minor & Extended Minors Options i) Art History and Visual Studies (T. Anzai) Attachment 6 MOTION to approve the Art History & Visual Studies Program outline with the following changes: 2. a – remove Jacqueline Nolte’s name from the list of permanent Art History faculty. 4.d – eliminate reference to credits 4.d – delete the last sentence 4.g – the last sentence: replace the word “director” with “senior administrator” or “in an administrative capacity”. 9.c – delete the last sentence 10.e – amend Program GPA to read “2.0”. Carroll) Attachment 7 The Creative Writing Courses are being offered within the English Department to provide an alternate way to look at literature through the creative process not to develop professional writers. MOTION that the BFA Minor and Extended Minor Program Outline be approved with the following changes: 3 4.d – eliminate reference to credits 4.d – delete the last sentence 9.c – delete the last sentence 10.e – change program GPA to read “2.0” 10.e – change reference to “Art History and Visual Studies” to “Creative Writing” J. Devitt) Attachment 8 Motion that we proceed with the approval process for the BFA Fashion Minor and Extended Minor Program with the recommended changes outlined below: 4.d – eliminate reference to credits 4 d – delete the last sentence 4.g -- Career Opportunities – the third sentence should be reworded; “students could gain” should be replaced with “could lead to students gaining”… 9.a – Lower level requirements: not all the level 100 courses need to be listed and should be reworded as follows: “21 credits chosen from any 100 level Fashion Design course or Fashion Design 250 or 291”. 9.c – delete the last sentence 9.c – reference to Specializations or options of the program (all details) – At this point in the discussion the group agreed that a future conversation needs to take place at Faculty Council about how minors and extended minors and BA/BFA programs will work together over time. 10.e – change program GPA to read “2.0” ACTION: Deanna will modify the program outline accordingly. CARRIED iv) Program Requirements Attachment 14 A revised copy was circulated. 6 MOTION that the amended version of the BFA Program Requirements be approved with the amendments outlined below: BFA Program requirements – add the word “Alternatively” to the beginning of the 2nd sentence Under “Discipline Requirements 3.a.ii – Studio Core should read (“36” credits) Ensure that the electives are added per attachments (v) Under Double Extended Minor Requirements for BFA with a Visual Arts Major: delete sentence “These double extended minors may not be combined in the Bachelor of Arts degree.” Performative Literacy should exclude 401/201 & 202; Historical/Critical Literacy will be expanded to include 401/201/202. That IPK 277 be added to Historical/Critical Literary listing. Amend the wording of the final clause of the following paragraph; delete “and prior to the completion of 60 credits” and replace it with “after the completion of at least 30 credits”. D. Devitt/J. Carroll) i) Course Revisions - English 099 Attachments 17, 17.1 MOTION to approve the revisions to English 099 Official Course Outline as presented. C. Richardson/P. Funk CARRIED ii) New Course - English 373 cross listed with Journalism 373 Attachment 18, 18.1, 18.2 The course was designed to be part of English Department major and will be cross listed with Journalism 373. It will relevant to majors students who are not necessarily interested in going into Journalism. It is explained clearly in calendar description. Devitt CARRIED iii) English 240 – An Introduction to Canadian Literature (circulated at the meeting) This is a four year review of the course which has already been to Pre UPAC 8 It was recommended that reference be made to the contribution of aboriginal literature under the course outline, course content and textbooks covered by the course. The calendar description and learning outcome should also be amended to reflect the indigenous factor. MOTION to approve English 240 with the recommended changes. C. Richardson/P.
