File: BBBH AUGUSTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS Student Representative to Board of Education The Augusta Board of Education believes it is important to seek out and consider students’ ideas, viewpoints and reactions to the educational program of the district. In order to provide student input and involvement, the board shall include a student representative to the board selected in accordance with procedures approved by the board. Participation The student board member shall be seated with regular board members and be recognized at meetings as an advisory non-voting member. Student board members shall receive all materials presented to board members except those related to closed or executive sessions. Term The term of the student board member shall be one calendar year, commencing on July 1st and ending on June 30th. The board shall act on appointments for the next term at the June meeting or the earliest subsequent meeting. Should a vacancy occur prior to the conclusion of the term another student may be appointed in accordance with established procedures to complete the term. A board member will serve as mentor to the student board member and shall, among other duties: assist the student with board protocol, aid the student in addressing issues, and inform the student as to which meeting he/she need not attend. A. The duties of the student board member include the following: 1. To provide continuing input for board deliberations 2. To strengthen communications between the board and district students 3. To represent all students and facilitate the discussion of all sides of issues related to students (this duty does not preclude the student board member from stating his/her individual opinion) B. The student board member shall be elected by the students in the district based on the following criteria: 1. The student board member shall be a full-time high school student and shall be at least in their sophomore year 2. The student body of the high school shall elect one representative and one alternate by May 1st in the school year preceding the appointment 3. The student board member shall maintain curricula and citizenship standards which include: B.1 Accumulative 3.0 GPA 116104814 Page 1 of 2 B.2 Standards of behavior and citizenship that are determined to be of high quality B.3 Adhere to standards of membership, attendance, and decorum C. Removal from Office 1. The student board member may be removed form office by a 2/3 vote of the board for any infraction of “B.3” above 2. If the position of student board member becomes vacant, the alternate shall assume the role as student board member. Another alternate shall be elected under criteria “B.1 and B.2” D. Student Applications 1. Any student wishing to apply for this position shall, by April 1st in the school year preceding the student’s appointment, provide the principal a letter of application, two faculty letters of recommendation, and proof that they are in compliance with “B.1 and B.3” 2. The principal will then interview each applicant and verify compliance with stated criteria 3. The principal will then create a ballot listing all qualified candidates and, prior to May 1st, hold student assembly during which each candidate has opportunity to express to the student body their interest in becoming a student board member 4. Within two days following the student assembly, and prior to May 1st, the student body, excluding seniors, will vote for the candidate of their choice. The ballots will then be counted, independently, by the principal and two faculty members 5. The student chosen will be introduced to the board at the board’s first meeting in May E. Elective Credits Students appointed as student board members may be awarded 1 elective credit (1/2 credit for semester I and ½ credit for semester II) for participating under the provisions of an independent study contract subject to prior approval of the principal. Credit will be awarded based on written self-reflection and verification of attendance and participation by the board chair at the conclusion of each semester.
