AJAWAH ROUSER
When we sing, when we shout,
We all know what we're about,
And we'll sing you a chorus or two.
You can bet we have the snap
That will put us on the map,
There's no reason why we should feel blue!
CHORUS:
For it's "Hi hi hee, Camp Ajawah for me,"
Shout out your praises loud and strong, Ajawah!
With all our pep, we'll make the others step,
And we'll march at the head of the throng (keep on marching),
And we'll march at the head of the throng.
On the land, in the lake,
Everywhere we take the cake,
In whatever we're doing we shine.
If you want to shine with us,
Fall in line without a fuss,
Pull your belt in and straighten your spine.
CHORUS
We're a bunch of husky lads,
We'll be better than our dads,
And our mothers will feel mighty proud.
We don't brag, we don't boast,
We're just telling you the truth,
Come now, fellows, sing this chorus loud.
CHORUS

ALL NIGHT, ALL DAY
CHORUS:
All night, all day, angels watching over me, my Lord,
All night, all day, angels watching over me.
Day is dying in the west,
Angels watching over me, my Lord.
Sleep my child and take your rest,
Angels watching over me.
CHORUS
Now I lay me down to sleep,
Angels watching over me, my Lord.
Pray the Lord my soul to keep,
Angels watching over me.
CHORUS
AMAZING GRACE
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace that brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
When we've been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise,
Than when we first begun.

THE ASH GROVE
The ash grove, how graceful, how plainly 'tis speaking,
The harp through it playing has language for me.
Whenever the light through its branches is breaking,
A host of kind faces is gazing on me.
The friends of my childhood again are before me,
Each step wakes a memory as freely I roam.
With soft whispers laden its leaves rustle o'er me,
The ash grove, the ash grove alone is my home.
My laughter is over, my step loses lightness,
Old countryside measures steal soft on my ear.
I only remember the past and its brightness,
The dear ones I mourn for again gather here.
From out of the shadows, their loving looks greet me,
And, wistfully searching the leafy green dome,
I find other faces, fond bending to greet me,
The ash grove, the ash grove alone is my home.
AT THE BOARDING HOUSE
At the boarding house where I lived,
Everything was growing old.
Silver threads among the butter,
And the bread was all a-mold.
When the dog died, we had sausage,
When the cat died, catnip tea.
When the landlord died I left there.
Spareribs were too much for me.

BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord,
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.
He has loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword,
His truth is marching on.
CHORUS:
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watchfires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps,
I have read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps,
His truth is marching on.
CHORUS
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat,
He has sifted out the hearts of men before the judgment seat,
O, be swift, my soul, to answer Him, be jubilant my feet,
His truth is marching on.
CHORUS

BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS
In 1814, we took a little trip,
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans,
And we met the mighty British in the town of New Orleans.
CHORUS:
We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin',
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
Fired once more and they began a-runnin',
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise,
If we didn't fire our muskets 'til we looked 'em in the eyes.
We held our fire 'til we saw their faces well,
Then we opened up our squirrel guns and really gave 'em, well . . .
CHORUS
Well, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles,
They ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em,
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
We fired our cannon 'til the barrel melted down,
Then we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round.
We filled his head with cannonballs and powdered his behind,
And when we touched the powder off, the 'gator lost his mind.
CHORUS
BE PREPARED
O, be prepared, prepared, prepared,
The motto of the Boy Scouts.
O, be prepared, prepared, prepared,
The motto of the Scouts.
Prepared, prepared, the motto of the Boy Scouts,
Prepared, prepared, the motto of the Scouts.

BLOWIN' IN THE WIND
How many roads must a man walk down,
Before they can call him a man?
Yes and how many seas must a white dove sail,
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes and how many times must the cannonballs fly,
Before they are forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
How many times must a man look up,
Before he can see the sky?
Yes and how many ears must one man have,
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows,
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
How many years can a mountain exist,
Before it is washed to the sea?
Yes and how many years can some people exist,
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes and how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretendin' he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
BOOMDEADA
I love the mountains, I love the rolling hills,
I love the flowers, even the daffodils.
I love the fire's glow, when all the lights are low.
Boomdeada, boomdeada, boomdeada, boomdeada…

CANADIAN WILDERNESS
Life of a voyageur, that of a sojourner,
Traveling around and round, but not from town to town,
Travels the lakes and streams, follows his distant dreams,
Peace on the waterway, blue sky or cloudy day.
CHORUS:
My heart has but one home,
From which I never roam,
Land of true happiness,
Canadian wilderness.
The mist from the roaring falls,
Distant hooting of the owls,
Fire crackling through the night,
Rising fog at dawn's first light,
Smoke rising from the fire,
Up to the trees in stately spire,
Reach for the sky in the evening glow,
Sun goes down, no North winds blow.
CHORUS
The call of the lonely loon,
Coyotes howling at the moon,
Wind rustling through trees,
That's the Canadian breeze,
Fall when the leaves come tumbling down,
Winter's blanket covers the ground,
Zephyrs whispering through the pines,
Voyageur's heritage, this is mine.
CHORUS

CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER
It's a long and dusty road,
It's a hard and heavy load,
And the people that I meet aren't always kind.
Some are bad, some are good,
Some have done the best they could,
And some have tried to ease my troubled mind.
CHORUS:
And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, where I'm bound,
I can't help but wonder where I'm bound.
Had a buddy way back home, and he started out to roam,
And they say that he's out by 'Frisco Bay.
And sometimes when I'm feeling blue,
His voice comes singing through
And I think I'll go and see him some old day.
CHORUS
If you see my passing by and you start to wonder why,
And you think that you might be a rambler too.
Nail your shoes to the kitchen floor, lace them up and bar the door,
And thank the Lord for the roof that's over you.
CHORUS
CIELITO LINDO
De la Sierra Morena, Cielito Lindo vienen bajando
Un par de o jitos negros, Cielito Lindo, de contrabando.
CHORUS:
Ay, ay, ay ay! Canta y no llores
Porque cantando se alegran, Cielito Lindo, los corazones.
Una flecha en el aire, Cielito Lindo, lanzo Cupido
Y como fue jugando, Cielito Lindo, yo fui el herido.
CHORUS

COME, SCOUTS
Come, scouts, we're off for today,
Hiking to hilltops far, far away.
With our colors flying high,
We'll reach the summit, by and by.
What though the trail be hard and long,
You'll always hear us singing our song,
As we hike along the trail,
Hiking to victory.
COWBOY'S LULLABY
Desert silvery blue beneath the pale moonshine,
Coyotes yappin' lazy on the hill,
Sleepy winks of light along the far skyline,
Time for millin' cattle to be still.
CHORUS:
So, now, the lightnin's far away,
The coyote's nothing skeery, just singin' to his dearie.
Yo ho, amala halilay.
So settle down, ye cattle, 'til the morning.
Nothin' out there on the plain that you folks need,
Nothin' there that seems to catch your eye.
Still, you've got to watch 'em or they'll all stampede,
Plunging down a 'rroyo bank to die.
CHORUS
Mostly it's a moonlight world my trail winds through,
Can't see far beyond the saddle horn,
Always in the distance is the silvery blue,
Always underneath, the rock and thorn.
CHORUS

DARK AS A DUNGEON
Come all you young fellows, so young and so fine,
And seek not your fortune in the dark dreary mine.
It will form as a habit and seep in your soul,
Till the blood in your veins runs as black as the coal.
CHORUS:
Where it's dark as the dungeon and damp as the dew,
Where the dangers are double and the pleasures are few.
Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines,
It's dark as a dungeon way down in the mine.
There's many a man I have seen in my day
Who lived just to labor his whole life away.
Like a fiend with his dope, or a drunkard his wine,
A man must have lust for the lure of the mine.
CHORUS
I hope when I'm gone and the ages shall roll,
My body will blacken and turn into coal.
Then I'll look from the door of my heavenly home,
And pity the miner a-digging my bones.
CHORUS
DO LORD
CHORUS:
Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me,
Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me,
Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me,
Look away beyond the blue.
I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun,
I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun,
I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun,
Look away beyond the blue.
CHORUS
I'll wear the robe and you'll wear the crown, we'll walk the golden stairs,
I'll wear the robe and you'll wear the crown, we'll walk the golden stairs,
I'll wear the robe and you'll wear the crown, we'll walk the golden stairs,
Look away beyond the blue.

DUNDERBACK
There was a fat old Dutchman, his name was Dunderback.
He was very fond of sausage meat and ate it by the pack.
He got himself a patent on a sausage-making machine,
And he got himself a sausage works, the finest ever seen.
CHORUS:
Oh Dunderback , oh Dunderback, how could you be so mean?
I'm sorry you invented that wonderful machine.
For pussycats and alleyrats will never more be seen,
For they'll all be ground to sausage meat in Dunderback's machine.
One day a very little boy came walking in the store,
To buy a pound of sausage meat and eggs a half a score.
And while he was a-waiting, he whistled up a tune,
And the sausage meat began to hop and dance around the room.
CHORUS
One day he got excited, the machine it wouldn't go.
So Dunderback, he crawled inside, the reason for to know.
His wife was having nightmares and walking in her sleep,
And she gave that crank an awful yank, and Dunderback was meat.
CHORUS
EARLY IN THE MORNING
I remember Grandpa telling me that I was born
As the sun was coming up, early in the morn.
'Member I was born, early in the morn.
CHORUS:
When you lift your eyes and
See the sun a-risin'
On the far horizon
Early in the morning.
It was early in the day when I set out to roam,
Kissed my love and went to seek my fortune far from home.
I set out to roam, far away from home.
CHORUS
But today when I awoke I missed my darling so.
Had to have her by my side for evermore I know.
Missed my darling so, evermore I know.
CHORUS
So tomorrow I'll be leaving at the break of day,
Going to hurry to my love and there I'll always stay.
Ajawah Song Book
- 15 -
At the break of day, there I'll always stay.
CHORUS
EDELWEISS
Edelweiss, edelweiss, every morning you greet me,
Small and white, green and bright, you look happy to meet me.
Blossom of snow, may you bloom and grow, bloom and grow forever.
Edelweiss, edelweiss, bless my homeland forever.
THE FAR NORTHLAND
It's the Far Northland that's a-calling me away,
As take I with my packsack to the road,
It's the call on me of the forest in the North,
As step I with the sunlight for my load.
CHORUS:
By Lake Duncan and Clearwater to the Bearskin I will go,
Where you see the loon and hear its plaintive wail.
If you're thinking in your inner heart there's swagger in my step,
You've never been along the Border Trail.
It's the flash of paddle blades a-gleaming in the sun,
Of canvas softly skimming by the shore,
It's the tang of pine and bracken coming on the breeze,
That calls me to the waterways once more.
CHORUS
FIVE HUNDRED MILES
If you miss the train I'm on,
You will know that I am gone,
You can hear that whistle blow a hundred miles.
A hundred miles, a hundred miles,
A hundred miles, a hundred miles,
You can hear that whistle blow a hundred miles.
Lord, I'm one, Lord I'm two,
Lord, I'm three, Lord I'm four,
Lord, I'm five hundred miles away from home.
Away from home, away from home,
Away from home, away from home,
Lord, I'm five hundred miles away from home.
Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name,
Lord, I can't go back home, this a-way.
This a-way, this a-way,
This a-way, this a-way,
Lord, I can't go back home, this a-way.

FOOTSTEPS
Footsteps on distant trails,
Campward are bending,
Wood fires and bubbling stew,
Rich odors sending.
Here is your heart's desire,
Rest when your feet may tire.
Open air and friends and food and fire,
Joys never ending.
Campfires are burning low,
No longer leaping,
Scouts sing their evening songs,
Shadows are creeping.
Sun sinks below the West,
Good night and may you rest,
Blankets warm and by soft sounds caressed,
Scouts all are sleeping.

FRIDAY NIGHT
'Twas Friday night when we set sail,
And we were not far from land.
When the captain spied a pretty mermaid,
With a comb and a glass in her hand.
CHORUS:
Oh, the ocean waves they roll,
And the stormy winds they blow,
As we poor sailors go skipping to the tops,
And the landlubbers lie down below, below, below,
And the landlubbers lie down below.
Then up spoke the captain of our gallant ship,
And a right smart man was he.
"I married me a wife in Salem town,
"And tonight a widow she'll be."
CHORUS
Then up spoke the cook of our gallant ship,
And a red hot cook was he.
"I'd rather live among my pots and pans,
"Than down at the bottom of the sea."
CHORUS
Then up spoke the cabin boy of our gallant ship,
And a dirty little rat was he.
"There's nary a soul in Salem town,
"That gives a darn about me."
CHORUS
Then three times 'round went our gallant ship,
And three times 'round went she.
In search of a lifeboat we all went down,
And we sank to the bottom of the sea.
CHORUS
GOD BLESS AMERICA
God bless American,
Land that I love,
Stand beside her and guide her,
Through the night with the light from above.
From the mountains to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam,
God bless America,
My home, sweet home,
God bless America,
My home, sweet home.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen!
O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!
Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!
Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.
From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!
Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the King!

GOOD NIGHT, IRENE
CHORUS:
Irene, good night, Irene, good night.
Good night, Irene, good night, Irene,
I'll see you in my dreams.
Last Saturday night I got married,
Me and my wife settled down.
Now me and my wife are parted,
I'll take another stroll downtown.
CHORUS
Sometimes I live in the country,
Sometimes I live in the town.
Sometimes I get a great notion
To jump into the river and drown.
CHORUS
Stop your ramblin,' stop your gamblin,'
Stop stayin' out late at night.
Go home to your wife and family
And sit by the fireside bright.
CHORUS
GREEN GROW THE RUSHES
I'll sing you one-o.
Green grow the rushes-o.
What is your one, oh?
One is one and all alone,
And evermore it shall be so.
I'll sing you two-o.
Green grow the rushes-o.
What is your two-o?
Two, two lily-white boys,
Clothe them all in green-o.
One is one and all alone,
And evermore it shall be so.
I'll sing you three-o. [and so on]
Three, three the rivals.
Four for the gospel makers.
Five for the symbols at your door.
Six for the six proud walkers.
Seven for the seven stars in the sky.
Eight for the April rainers.
Nine for the nine bright shiners.
Ten for the ten commandments.
Eleven for the eleven that went to Heaven.
Twelve for the twelve apostles.

THE HAPPY WANDERER
I love to go a-wandering,
Along the mountain track,
And as I go, I love to sing,
My knapsack on my back.
CHORUS:
Valderi, valdera, valdera,
Valdera ha ha ha ha ha,
Valderi, valdera,
[repeal last line of previous verse]
My knapsack on my back.
I wave my hand to all I meet,
And they wave back to me,
And blackbirds call so loud and sweet,
From every greenwood tree.
CHORUS
High overhead, the skylarks wing,
They never rest at home,
But just like me, they love to sing,
As o'er the world we roam.
CHORUS
I love to wander by the stream,
That dances in the sun,
So joyously it calls to me,
"Come, join my happy song!"
CHORUS
Oh, may I go a-wandering,
Until the day I die,
And may I always laugh and sing,
Beneath God's clear blue sky!
CHORUS
HI HO
Hi ho, nobody home,
No meat, no drink, no money, have I none,
But still I will be happy.
[repeat]

HOBO'S LULLABY
CHORUS:
Go to sleep, my weary hobo,
Let the miles drift slowly by,
Can't you hear those steel rails humming?
That's the hobo's lullaby.
Don't you worry about tomorrow,
Let tomorrow come and go.
Tonight you're in a safe warm box car,
Safe from all the wind and snow.
CHORUS
I know your clothes are worn and ragged,
And your hair is turning gray.
Smile and lift your head at sorrow,
You'll find happiness some day.
CHORUS
I know policemen cause you trouble,
They cause trouble everywhere.
When you die and go to heaven,
There'll be no policemen there.
CHORUS
I WAS DREAMING OF A CAMPFIRE
I was dreaming of a campfire,
Burning clear and bright,
The glistening stars were our above me,
'Twas on a summer's night.
I was dreaming that my comrades,
All were camping with me, too.
Then I woke and look around me,
And, say, that dream was true.

IF I HAD A HAMMER
If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning,
I'd hammer in the evening, all over this land,
I'd hammer out justice, I'd hammer out warning,
I'd hammer out love between all of my brothers,
All over this land.
If I had a bell, I'd ring it in the morning,
I'd ring it in the evening, all over this land,
I'd hammer out justice, I'd hammer out warning,
I'd hammer out love between all of my brothers,
All over this land.
If I had a song, I'd sing it in the morning,
I'd sing it in the evening, all over this land,
I'd sing out danger, I'd sing out warning,
I'd sing out love between all of my brothers,
All over this land.
Now I have a hammer, and I have a bell,
And I have a song to sing all over this land,
It's the hammer of justice, it's the bell of freedom,
It's the song of love between all of my brothers,
All over this land.
IF YOU WANT TO BE A BOY SCOUT
If you want to be a Boy Scout, just come along with me,
And we'll hike by the light, by the light of the moon.
Oh, if you want to be a Boy Scout, just come along with me,
And we'll hike by the light of the moon.
By the light of the silvery moon,
Oh, we will hike by the light of the moon.
Oh, if you want to be a Boy Scout, just come along with me,
And we'll hike by the light of the moon.
Oh, the Boy Scouts are coming with a choo-choo harah,
Choo-choo, harah, choo-choo harah,
Oh, the Boy Scouts are coming with a choo-choo harah,
Choo-choo harah rah rah rah rah! Rah! Rah!

JAMES JAMES
James James Morrison Morrison Weatherby George Dupres,
Took great care of his mother, though he was only three.
James James Morrison Morrison said to his mother, said he,
"You must never go down to the end of the town,
"If you don't go down with me.
"You must never go down to the end of the town,
"If you don't go down with me."
James James Morrison's mother, she put on her golden gown,
James James Morrison's mother, she rode to the end of the town.
James James Morrison's mother said to herself, said she,
"Oh, I can go down to the end of the town,
"And be back in time for tea.
"Oh, I can go down to the end of the town,
"And be back in time for tea."
King John put up a notice: "Lost, stolen or strayed.
"James James Morrison's mother she seems to have been mislaid.
"Wandering vaguely all about, quite of her own accord.
"She tried to get down to the end of the town,
"Forty shillings reward."
"She tried to get down to the end of the town,
"Forty shillings reward."
James James Morrison Morrison, commonly known as "Jim,"
Said to his other relations, not to go blaming him,
'Cause James James Morrison Morrison said to his mother, said he,
"You must never go down to the end of the town,
"If you don't go down with me.
"You must never go down to the end of the town,
"If you don't go down with me."
James James Morrison's mother, she hasn't been heard of since,
King John said he was sorry, and so did the Queen and the Prince,
King John, somebody told me, said to a man he knew,
"If people go down to the end of the town,
"What can anyone do?
"If people go down to the end of the town,
"What can anyone do?"

Eating all the gumdrops he can see.
Stop, kookaburra, stop, kookaburra,
Save some there for me.

Counting all the monkeys he can see.
Stop, kookaburra, stop, kookaburra,

LIFEBOAT CREW
Oh, the lifeboat crew are we,
And we sail the stormy sea,
Although the oceans winds, they blow.
We heed our captain's call,
"Man the lifeboats, one and all,
"There's a schooner in the harbor heaving to."
We'll save her if we can,
Man the lifeboats, every man,
And away goes the lifeboat crew.

THE LITTLE MAN
A little man walked up and down, to see what he could find in town.
A little man walked up and down, to see what he could find in town.
He walked into a swell affair, and sat himself upon a chair.

He searched the pockets of his pants, but all he found was two halfpence.

He scanned the menu through and through, to see what two halfpence would do.

MACNAMARA'S BAND
Oh, me name is MacNamara, I'm the leader of the band,
Although we're few in numbers, we're the finest in the land,
Of course, I am conductor and we very often play,
Before the great musicians that you hear of every day.
Oh, the drums go bang, the cymbals clang, the horns, they blaze away.
McCartney pumps the old bassoon while I the pipes do play,
Hennessey Tennessey tootles the flute, the music is something grand,
A credit to old Ireland is MacNamara's band.
CHORUS:

Da-da-da-da Boom! Boom!
Da-da-da-da-da-da Boom! Boom!
Da-da-da-da Boom! Boom!
Da-da-da-da Boom! Boom!
Da-da-da-da-da-da Boom! Boom!
Oh! My name is Uncle Yulius and from Sweden I have come,
To play with MacNamara's band and beat the big bass drum,
And when I march along the street the ladies think I'm grand
They shout "There's Uncle Yulius playing with an Irish band."
Oh! I wear a bunch of shamrocks and a uniform of green,
And I'm the funniest looking Swede that you have ever seen.
There's O'Briens and Ryans and Sheehans and Meehans, they come from Ireland,
But by Yimminy I'm the only Swede in MacNamara's band.

MORNING HAS BROKEN
Morning has broken like the first morning,
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird.
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning,
Praise for them springing fresh from the world.
Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden,
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass.
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning,
Born of the one light Eden saw play.
Praise with elation, praise every morning,
God's re-creation of the new day.
THE MTA
Oh, let me tell you of a story about a man named Charlie,
On a tragic and fateful day.
He put ten cents in his pocket, kissed his wife and family,
Went to ride on the MTA.
CHORUS:
But did he ever return? No, he never returned,
And his fate is still unlearned.
He may ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston,
He's the man who never returned.
Charlie handed in his dime at the Skully Square Station,
And he changed for Jamaica Plain.
When he got there, the conductor told him, "One more nickel,"
Charlie couldn't get off that train.
CHORUS
Now all night long Charlie rides through that station,
Crying, "What will become of me?"
"How can I afford to see my sister in Chelsea,
"Or my cousin in Roxbury?"
CHORUS
Now, Charlie's wife goes down to the Skully Square Station,
Every day at quarter past two,
And through the open window she hands Charlie a sandwich,
As the train goes rumbling through.
CHORUS
Now, you citizens of Boston, don't you think it's a scandal,
How the people have to pay and pay,
Fight the fare increase, vote for George O'Brian,
Get poor Charlie off the MTA.

NOVA SCOTIA
The sun was setting in the West,
The birds were singing from every tree,
And all nature seemed inclined for to rest,
But still there was no rest for me.
CHORUS:
Farewell to Nova Scotia, the seabound coast,
May your mountains dark and dreary be,
But when I'm far away on the briny ocean tossed,
Will you ever heave a sigh and a wish for me?
I have three brothers and they are dressed,
There arms are folded on their breasts,
But a poor simple sailor just like me,
Must be tossed and driven on the dark blue sea.
CHORUS
The drums do sound, the wars do alarm,
The captain calls, I must obey,
Farewell, farewell to the Nova Scotia's charm,
For it's early in the morning, I am far, far away.
CHORUS
I grieve to leave my native land,
I grieve to leave my comrades all,
And my aged parents, who are all so, so dear,
And the bonnie, bonnie lass that I do adore.

My cattle range,

I'll take my rope,

Say "Adios"

And turn my head
Toward Mexico.
OLD 97
Well, they handed him his orders in Monroe, Virginia,
Said "Stephen you're way behind time.
This ain't 38, it's Old 97,
So bring her into Danville on time."
Well, he turned and he said to his black, greasy fireman,
"Shovel on a little more coal,
And when we pass old White Oaks Mountain,
Watch Old 97 roll."
He was comin' down that road doing 90 miles an hour,
The whistle broke into a scream,
He was found in the cab with his hand on the throttle,
Scalded to death by steam.
Well, the telegram came down from Washington Station,
And this is how it read:
"That old engineer that was driving 97
Is lying in Danville, dead."

PUFF, THE MAGIC DRAGON
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea,
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honolly.
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal, Puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff.
CHORUS:
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea,
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honolly.
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea,
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honolly.
Together, they would travel on a boat with billowed sails,
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'r they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name.
CHORUS
A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys,
Painted rings and giant wings make way for other toys,
One gray day it happened, Jackie Paper came no more,
And Puff, that mighty dragon, he ceased his mighty roar.
His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, Puff could not be brave,
So Puff, that mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave.

RAGTIME COWBOY JOE
Out in Arizona where the badmen are,
There's nothing there to guide you but the evening star,
The roughest and the toughest of the whole darn crew
Was Ragtime Cowboy Joe.
He always sings raggedy music to his cattle
As he swings back and forth in the saddle
On a horse, pretty horse, syncopated meter,
Cattle do the dance to the roar of his repeater.
How they run, run, run, when they hear his gun,
For the western folks all know,
He's a highfalutin, rapid shooting son of a gun from Arizona,
Ragtime Cowboy, talk about your cowboy,
Ragtime Cowboy Joe.

May all your ramblin' bring you joy,
So here's to you, my ramblin' boy,
May all your ramblin' bring you joy.
In Tulsa town, we chanced to stray,
We thought that we might work one day,
The bossman said he'd work for one,
Said, "Come on, buddy, let's ramble on."
CHORUS
Late one night in the hobo camp,
The weather, it was cold and damp,
He caught the chills, and he caught 'em bad,

THE RUSSIAN SONG
Can you guess? Can you guess? Can you guess just who we are?
We come from afar, from the land of the czar.
Can you think? Can you think? Can you think who we might be?
We're Len and Trots, the diplomats, who come from 'cross the sea.
I'm Lenin, I'm Trotske, the Russian diplomatske.
And when we've overthrown the Czar, we'll be leaders near’n far,
Hi ho! Hi ho! I'm Len! I'm Trots!
We're the Russian diplomats!
So, Russia Preesha Prussia Preesha, we sail well.
Hi ho the dairy-o, the farmer in the dell.
Politics, politics, we are the Bolsheviks,
We know all the tricks that go well with the hicks.
We can speak for a week, and our talk is never flat,
'Cause I'm a Republican, and I'm a Democrat.
We work well together, whatever be the weather.
When I say "No" and I say "Yes,"
One of us is right, I guess,
Hi ho, hi ho, I'm Len, I'm Trots,
We're the Russian diplomats.
So, Russia Preesha Prussia Preesha, we sail well.
Hi ho the dairy-o, the farmer in the dell.
We landed here on Ellis Isle, they'll only let us stay a while,
After we've completed our show, back to Russia we must go,
Hi ho, hi ho, I'm Len, I'm Trots,
We're the Russian diplomats.

SING A SONG OF CITIES
Sing a song of cities, just roll them cotton bales,
A poor boy ain't half so happy, as when he's out of jail.
Norfolk for its oyster shells, Boston for its beans,
Charleston for its rice and corn,
But for sinners, New Orleans.
Oh, I've been working on the railroad,
All the livelong day.
I've been working on the railroad,
Just to pass the time away.
Can't you hear the whistle blowing,
Rise up so early in the morn,
Can't you hear captain shouting,
"Dinah, blow your horn."
Dinah, dinah, come blow your horn.
SING YOUR WAY HOME

SO LONG
Well, I've sung this song and I'll sing it again,
'Bout a place I once lived on the wild, windy plain,
In the month of April, in a county called clay,
Here's what all of the people did say, singing
CHORUS:
So long, it's been good to know you,
So long, it's been good to know you,
So long, it's been good to know you,
This dusty old dust storm is getting my home,
And I've got to be moving along.
Well, the dust storm blew and it hit like thunder,
It dusted us over, it dusted us under,
It blocked out the traffic, it blocked out the sun,
So straight for home all the people did run, singing
CHORUS
Well, the lovers they sat in the dark and they sparked,
They hugged and they kissed in that dusty old dark,
They sighed and they cried and they hugged and they kissed,
But instead of marriage, they talked like this, Honey
CHORUS
Well the telephone rang and it rang off the wall,
And that was the preacher a'making his call,
He said, "Kind friend, this may be the end,
"You have your last chance at salvation from sin."
Well, the church it was jammed and the church it was packed,
The seats were all filled from the front to the back,
The preacher could not read a word of his text,
So he folded his specs and took up the collection, singing

Happy as the day when we line up for our pay,
As we go rolling, rolling home.

I picked up my hammer and I walked to the mine,
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal,

A lot of men didn't and a lot of men died,
I've got one fist of iron, I've got one fist of steel,
If the left one don't get you then the right one will.
CHORUS
THE SLOOP JOHN B
We came on the Sloop John B,
My grandfather and me,
Round Nassau town we did roam.
Drinking all night, got into a fight,
I feel so break up, I want to go home.
CHORUS:
So, hoist up the John B sails,
See how the mainsail sets,
Send for the captain ashore,
I want to go home.
I want to go home, I want to go home,
I feel so break up, I want to go home.
The first mate, he got drunk,
Broke in the captain's trunk,
Constable had to come and take him away,
Sheriff John Stone, why don't you let me go home?
I feel so break up, I want to go home.
CHORUS
The poor cook, he had fits,
Ate up all of my grits,
Then he took and he ate up all of my corn.
Sheriff John Stone, why won't you let me go home,
This is the worst trip I've ever been on.

SOFTLY NOW (Scout Vespers)
Softly, now the light of day,
O'er our campfire fades away.
Silently each scout should ask,
"Have I done my daily task?"
"Have I kept my honor bright?
"Can I guiltless sleep tonight?
"O, have I done and have I dared
"Everything to be prepared?"
THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER
O, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed, at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
Through the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O, say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream;
'Tis the Star-Spangled Banner, O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Oh, thus be it ever when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto, "In God is our trust"
And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

SPRINGHILL MINE DISASTER
In the town of Springhill, Nova Scotia,
Down in the dark of the Cumberland Mines,
There's blood on the sand and the miners lie,
In roads that never saw sun nor sky,
Roads that never saw sun nor sky.
In the town of Springhill you don't rest easy,
Often the earth will rumble and roll,
When the earth gets restless, miners die,
For blood and bone is the price of coal,
Blood and bone is the price of coal.
In the town of Springhill, Nova Scotia,
Back in the year of '58,
Days still come and the sun still shines,
But it's dark as a tomb in the Cumberland Mine,
Dark as a tomb in the Cumberland Mine.
Down at the coal face, the miners working,
The rattle of the belt and the cutter's blade,
There was a rumble of rock and the walls came down,
Living and the dead men two miles down,
Living and the dead men two miles down.
Twelve men lay two miles from the pit shaft,
Twelve men lay in the dark alone,
Long, hot days in the miners' tomb,
It was three feet high and a hundred long,
Three feet high and a hundred long.
Threes days passed and the lamps gave out,
So Caleb Rushton, he up and said,
"There is no water, no light nor bread,
"So we'll live on song and hope instead,
"We'll live on song and hope instead."
Listen through the rubble for the barefaced miners,
Listen through the rubble for the rescue team,
Six hundred feet of coal and slag,
Hope imprisoned in a three foot seam,
Hope imprisoned in a three foot seam.
Ten days passed and some were rescued,
Leaving the dead to lie alone,
All their lives, they'd dug a grave,
Two miles of earth for a marking stone, two miles of earth for a marking stone.

SWING LOW
CHORUS:
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.
I looked over Jordan, and what did I see?
Coming for to carry me home,
A band of angels, coming after me,
Coming for to carry me home.
CHORUS
If you get to heaven before I do,
Coming for to carry me home,
Tell all of my friends I'm coming there, too,
Coming for to carry me home.
CHORUS
I'm sometimes up, and sometimes down,
Coming for to carry me home,
Still my soul feels heavenly bound,
Coming for to carry me home.
CHORUS
I've never been to heaven, but I've been told,
Coming for to carry me home,
That the streets in heaven are paved with gold,
Coming for to carry me home.

TENTING TONIGHT
We're tenting tonight on the old campground,
Give us a song to cheer,
Our weary hearts, a song of home,
And friends we love so dear.
CHORUS:
Many are the hearts that are weary tonight,
Waiting for the war to cease,
Many are the hearts that are looking for the light,
To see the dawn of peace.
We're tenting tonight on the old campground,
Thinking of the days gone by,
Of the loved ones at home that gave us the hand,
And the tear that said "Goodbye."
CHORUS
We're tired of war on the old campground,
Many are dead and gone,
Of the brave and true who've left their homes,
Others been wounded long.
CHORUS
We've been fighting today on the old campground,
Many are lying near,
Some are dead and some are dying,
Many are in tears.
CHORUS
Tenting tonight, tenting tonight,
Tenting on the old campground.

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
CHORUS:
This land is your land, this land is my land,
From California to the New York island,
From the redwood forest to the gulf stream waters,
This land was made for you and me.
As I was walking that ribbon of highway,
I saw above me that endless skyway,
I saw below me that golden valley,
This land was made for you and me.
CHORUS
I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps,
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts,
And all around me a voice was sounding,
"This land was made for you and me!"
CHORUS
When the sun comes shining and I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting, a voice was chanting,
"This land was made for you and me!"
CHORUS
THE THREE BEARS
Once upon a time in a nursery rhyme there were the Three Bears, cha, cha, cha.
They all went a-walking in the woods and a-talking,
And along came a little girl with long, flowing, golden curls.
Her name was Goldilocks, and up upon the door she knocks.
She didn't care, that no one was there,
She walked right in, and set herself upon a chair.
Home came those three bears.
"Someone's been eating my porridge," said the papa bear (said the papa bear).
"Someone's been eating my porridge," said the mama bear (said the mama bear).
"Hey, mama me-bear," said the little wee bear, "someone has broken my chair! Unh!"
Goldilocks, she woke up, she broke up the party.
She beat it outta there, she beat it outta there.
"Bye, bye, bye-bye-bye," said the papa bear (said the papa bear).
"Bye, bye, bye-bye-bye," said the mama bear (said the mama bear).
"Hey, mama me-bear," said the little wee bear, "Bye-bye-bye-bye-bye-bye-bye! Unh!"
TIJUANA JAIL
O, we went one day about a month ago,
Just to have a little fun in Mexico.
Ajawah Song Book

We ended up in a gambling spot,
Where the liquor flowed and the dice were hot.
CHORUS:
So here we are in the Tijuana jail,
Ain't got no friends to go our bail.
So here we'll stay 'cause we can't pay,
Just sent our mail to the Tijuana jail.
We were shooting dice, really raking in the dough,
When we heard that whistle blow.
We started to run when a man in blue
Said, "Se–or, come with me, 'cause I want you."
CHORUS
Five hundred dollars will set us free,
I couldn't raise a penny if you threatened me.
I know five hundred don't sound like much,
But just try and find somebody to touch.

THE TITANIC
Oh, they built the ship "Titanic," to sail the ocean blue.
And they thought they had a ship that the water wouldn't go through.
But the good Lord raised His hand, said that ship would never land,
It was sad when that great ship went down.
CHORUS:
It was sad, it was sad,
It was sad when the great ship went down
To the bottom of the sea, sea, sea, sea,
(Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives)
It was sad when the great ship went down.
Oh, they were not far from England, they were not far from shore,
When the rich refused to associate with the poor.
So they sent them down below where they'd be the first to go,
It was sad when that great ship went down.
CHORUS
Oh, they threw the lifeboats out on that dark and dreary sea,
And the band struck up with "Nearer My God to Thee."
Little children wept and cried as the waves swept over the side,
It was sad when that great ship went down.
CHORUS
Oh, the moral of the story, is very plain to see,
Is to wear a life preserver when you go out to sea,
For the great "Titanic" was and nevermore shall be,
It was sad when the great ship went down.
CHORUS
TO STOP THE TRAIN
(sung staggered by table)
(Introduced by Bruce Jones)
To stop the train in cases of emergency
Just pull down the chain, pull down the chain.
Penalty for improper use five pounds.

TOM DOOLEY
CHORUS:
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley,
Hang down your head and cry,
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die.
Met her on the mountain,
There I took her life,
Met her on the mountain,
Stabbed her with my knife.
CHORUS
This time tomorrow,
Reckon where I'll be,
Hadn't a-been for Grayson,
I'd have been in Tennessee.
CHORUS
This time tomorrow,
Reckon where I'll be,
Down in some lonesome valley,
Hanging from a white oak tree.
CHORUS
TRAMP, TRAMP, TRAMP
Tramp, tramp, tramp, the scouts are marching,
Under smiling skies above.
To the red, the white and blue
We will be forever true,
To the glory of the country that we love.

TROOP 33 ANTHEM
Westminster Troop, O Thirty-three,
Again we pledge our vows to thee.
Again our voices raise in song,
To sing thy praises loud and long.
A thousand knots we've swiftly tied,
A thousand lakes we've camped beside,
We've heard old Mother Nature's call,
With better health and fun for all.
A kindly deed for every day,
A better scout in work and play,
All Eagles we will strive to be,
To honor thee, O Thirty-three.
UPWARD TRAIL
(1) We're on the upward (2) trail,
We're on the upward trail,
Singing as we go,
Going home.
We're on the upward trail,
We're on the upward trail,
Singing, singing, everybody singing,
Going home.

In love and good fellowship let us unite,
Viva la compagnie!
CHORUS
Now wider and wider our circle expands,
Viva la compagnie!
We sing to our comrades in far away lands,
Viva la compagnie!

WALTZING MATILDA
Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong,
Under the shade of a koolibah tree,
And he sang as he sat and waited while his billy boiled,
"You'll come a-waltzing matilda with me."
CHORUS:
Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda,
You'll come a-waltzing matilda with me,
[repeat last two lines of previous verse:]
And he sang as he sat and waited while his billy boiled,
"You'll come a-waltzing matilda with me."
Down came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tuckerbag,
"You'll come a-waltzing matilda with me."
CHORUS
Down came the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred,
Down came the troopers, one, two, three!
Who's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tuckerbag?
"You'll come a-waltzing matilda with me."
CHORUS
Up jumped the swagman, sprang into the billabong,
"You'll never catch me alive," cried he,
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,
"You'll come a-waltzing matilda with me."

WATERLOO
CHORUS:
Waterloo, Waterloo, where will you meet your Waterloo?
Everybody has his day, everybody has to pay,
Everybody has to meet his Waterloo.
Now old Adam was the first in history,
With an apple he was tempted and deceived,
Just for spite, the Devil made him take a bite,
And that's where old Adam met his Waterloo.
CHORUS
Little general, Napoleon of France,
Tried to conquer the world but lost his pants,
Met defeat known as "Bonaparte's Retreat,"
And that's where Napoleon met his Waterloo.
CHORUS
Now, Tom Dooley, his woman was untrue,
Took her life, and he lost his, too,
Now he swings were the little birdies sing,
And that's where Tom Dooley met his Waterloo.
WE SHALL OVERCOME
We shall overcome, we shall overcome,
We shall overcome some day.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
That we shall overcome some day.
We'll walk hand in hand, we'll walk hand in hand,
We'll walk hand in hand some day.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
That we shall overcome some day.
We are not afraid, we are not afraid,
We are not afraid today.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
That we shall overcome some day.
We shall live in peace, we shall live in peace,
We shall live in peace some day.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
That we shall overcome some day.
The truth will make us free, the truth will make us free,
The truth will make us free some day.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,

WHALING SONG
'Tis advertised in Boston, New York and Buffalo,
A hundred hearty sailors, a-whaling for to go.
CHORUS:
Singing, blow ye winds of morning, blow ye winds hi ho,
Haul away your running gear and blow, boys, blow.
They tell you of the clipper ships a-running in and out,
They say you'll take five hundred whales before you're six months out.
CHORUS
The skipper's on the afterdeck, a-squinting at the sails,
While up above a lookout spies a mighty school of whales.
CHORUS
So lower down the boats, my boys, and after him we'll travel,
And if you get too near his tail he'll kick you to the devil.
CHORUS
And now that he is ours, my boys, we'll bring him along side,
And over with our blubber hooks, we'll rob him of his hide.
CHORUS

YOU'RE A GRAND OLD FLAG
You're a grand old rag, you're a high flying flag,
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of the land I love,
The land of the free and the brave.
Every heart beats true for the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the Grand Old Flag.
