EAP 1101 - Speech/Listening Level 1
Course Competencies:
Course Description: Students develop the ability to understand frequently
used words in oral contexts and understand and respond appropriately to
simple phrases and questions.
3 credits
Prerequisites: Students place into this level through their score on the
Michigan
Co-requisites: EAP 1101L
PRODUCTION
Competency 1: The student will use grammatical structures consistent with level
1.
Competency 2: The student will use present tenses in sentences and demonstrate
the ability to: Describe daily routines; talk about the weather; describe
possessions; talk about likes and dislikes
Competency 3: The student will use present tenses in questions and demonstrate
the ability to inquire about basic subjects such as locations, prices, dates, times, and
friends
Competency 4: The student will demonstrate the ability to interact in basic social
situations such as introductions, greetings, appreciation, and apology.
Competency 5: The student will demonstrate limited oral control over “s” forms
including plurals, possessives, 3rd person singular, and contractions.
Competency 6: The student will demonstrate the ability to clearly pronounce the
letters of the alphabet and numbers.

EAP 1301 - Speech/Listening Level 3
Course Description: Students develop speaking and listening
skills necessary for participating in classroom discussions with an
emphasis on clarification through rewording and asking questions.
3 credits
Prerequisites: EAP 1201 or equivalent proficiency
Co-requisites: EAP 1301L
PRODUCTION
Competency 1: The student will use grammatical structures consistent
with levels 1-3.
Competency 2: The student will by participate in classroom
discussions with emphasis on narrating and describing situations to
develop oral communication skills including fluency, idea sequencing,
accuracy, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
Competency 3: The student will demonstrate the ability to ask and
answer questions, reword statements, and ask for clarification.
Competency 4: The student will actively participate and be sufficiently
understood in role-playing, simulating simple social and academic
situations.

Course Description: Students develop communication, organization,
and pronunciation skills necessary for effective academic presentation
and discussion with an introduction to lecture note taking.
3 credits
Prerequisites: EAP 1401 or equivalent proficiency

skills necessary for full participation in mainstream college
classrooms including comprehension of extensive discourse.

Course Requirements:
In addition to your class time, you are required to ___

Attendance Policy: You should come to every class in order to obtain the most
complete educational experience. Participation in this class is only possible if you attend
class.
Absences: Students may be absent from one class with no penalties. Students who are
absent ____ times will see their final grade lowered by one letter grade. Students who
are absent ____ times will see their final grade lowered by two letter grades. Students
who are absent ____ or more times will be asked to drop the class, or the instructor will
drop them or assign a grade of “F”.
Tardiness: If you are late, please enter quietly and join in the class activities. For every
