John Miles of Maryland and his unknown wife were born within a year of each other. These Rufuses both had sons named Ernest who were born within a year of each other. Their fathers, Uriah Miles and John Miles (15 Oct. 1807-12

Nov. 1884), are believed to be brothers. John is also believed to be Uriah’s uncle by marriage, having married as his first wife a maternal aunt of Uriah’s wife. Uriah’s brother-in-law,

James Miles, Jr. (about 1813-1889), also resident in Macon County for part of his life, is also believed to be another brother. All three men originated in Caswell County, North Carolina.

Based on onomastic evidence, it might be expected that James (or its equivalent, Jacob),

Rufus, and Ernest were important family names in previous generations of the family. They have not led to the ancestors of Uriah and his brothers, however.

It is possible that Uriah was a descendant of a Miles family of Maryland, as follows: 65

Thomas Miles (1702-1766) of Maryland and his unknown first wife

Jacob Miles (circa 1732-circa 1804) and Hannah McComas, of Maryland and

Caswell County, North Carolina

Alexander Miles (circa 1749-1783) and Lucy Hensley of Caswell County

John Miles (born circa 1779)

Jacob Miles (born circa 1782)

Thomas Miles (born circa 1783)

Jacob Miles Jr. (5 Feb. 1756-?) and Nancy Rice of North Carolina

Thomas Miles (born before 28 June 1784)

John Miles (born before 28 June 1784)

Uriah is possibly a son of one of the five great-great-grandsons of John Miles of Maryland.

Prior to his death, one of Eunice’s cousins with whom she was close, Nat Sims, returned to

Missouri from Southern California to tell her a “terrible” (author’s word, Nat’s sentiment) family secret: the Miles family were “Indians.” Eunice thought this was nonsense, given that she remembered her maternal grandfather, Rufus Miles, as having a full white beard.

66
