The UK Centre for Carnival Arts has been commissioned by the Heritage Lottery
Fund to develop a digital carnival archive with it’s regional partners in
Southend, Norwich and Northampton. The archive will celebrate the rich heritage of carnivals and the wonderful contribution of carnival artists in Luton.
It will be digital because we believe that it is the best way to reach as many people as possible.
The Project has an exciting programme of activities in local schools, FE and HE institutions, including artists’ workshops and the creation classroom resources.
Our goal is to ensure that as many young people as possible learn about carnival and its rich heritage in Luton.
As part of this project the UKCCA is planning to run CPD sessions for teachers during Feb/March 2012. The CPDs will be held at the UKCCA in Luton and will cover a range of carnival art forms.
The UKCCA wishes to commission Carnival artists to deliver part of the CPD sessions. This document presents details about:
The proposed CPD content
Criteria for selection of artists
How interested artists should apply to work with us on the CPDs.
Since its formation in 1998, the UKCCA (formerly Luton Carnival Arts
Development Trust) has developed from a fledgling organisation with an annual revenue income of less than £50,000, to become Luton’s leading arts organisation with revenue income for the 2010-11 financial year that will exceed £1 million. It successfully secured more than £7m capital funding from regional and national sources to realise a UK Centre for Carnival Arts, a unique national resource which opened its doors in Luton in 2009.
The year-round projects and activities that UKCCA delivers together with
Luton’s schools, young people, community groups and local artists have been instrumental in fostering community cohesion amongst its residents. The organisation reaches the diverse local audience, fostering racial integration and is a significant source of social capital. The development of the UK
Carnival Centre is a key capital project in the Eastern region, taking a national leadership role in carnival arts. It is an event and performance venue, a learning and skills hub for carnival and street arts practice, and a leader in talent spotting and youth development. Our long term ambition is to be recognised as an international centre at the heart and forefront of carnival arts innovation and practice.

Key points about the proposed CPDs are as follows:
Purpose: we are working with three flagship schools on the Carnival
Archive Project in Luton and will be working with them to create learning resources for the Carnival Archive website. The CPDs will introduce the
Carnival Archive as a resource for teachers and will facilitate the creation of a carnival unit of work for each key stage with direct input from carnival artists. These resources will then be made available online so that as many schools as possible can use them and take part in Love
Luton 2012 the carnival event for this coming year.
Timing: we will be running CPD sessions for teachers during February and
March 2012. There will be a total of 3 CPDs and we will need an artist with a different specialism for each.
Location: the workshops will take place at the UKCCA, 3 St Mary’s Road,
Luton LU1 3JA.
Length of sessions: The artist’s workshop will form the second half of the
CPD session and will last for 3 hours.
