National Academy of Vector Borne Diseases is a Registered Society (Regn. No. 19767/199 of 1994-95 under Society Registration Act XXI of 1860) and pioneering institution of the country dealing with all vectors and vector borne diseases. Started in 1994, its registered office is in Bhubaneswar, Orissa (India). The academy publishes an annual Newsletter. So far the academy has organized nine international symposia and the 9th symposium was organized in Puri from 14--17 Feb 2008. The symposium was attended by 300+ scientists from India and abroad belonging to research institutions, universities, vector borne disease control programme managers and scientific staff working at the centre, states and urban areas. Members of this academy are very distinguished scientists of the country, many of them have achieved high international acclaim. Views expressed during the conference have greatly influenced the policy decisions of the government. The National Academy of Vectors and Vector Borne Diseases have instituted several awards in recognition of the outstanding research contributions made by the scientists in the field of vectors and vector borne diseases. The NAVBD is organizing X International symposium in Goa organized by Goa University and National Institute of Malaria Research. Goa, a small state on the West Coast of India is one of the best holiday destinations in the World. Famous for its long stretch of beaches, undulating terrain and dense forests and scenic spots along the Western Ghats, is a favourite destination for the tourists and is often referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’. The month of November is pleasant with the temperature ranging between 22o and 32oC with 70 – 75% humidity. Goa University was established in 1985 incorporating the then existing PG Centre for Instruction and Research of the University of Bombay. This is the only University in the state of Goa. Located on the scenic Taleigao Plateau, the University has become the centre of higher education in the State of Goa. National Institute of Malaria Research is a premier research institution of ICMR having 10 Field Stations across India. NIMR is devoted to malaria research from basic to genomics and applied to operational and provides research back up to National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme and plays a key role in devising strategies for the effective management of vector borne diseases.
