He held grand parties with all kinds of people, but non really knew much about him. Yet, he was a simple man who longs for a happy life with his beloved Daisy. He doesn't have a renowned background or pedigree, but with ambition and a dream, he believed in the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock, which seemed to propel him to the bright future right ahead of him. Daisy is this gorgeous and attractive woman who is eager for material comforts in life. I couldn't blame her because under the same circumstances, the decisions I would make might be identical to hers. Most people want a luxurious life with a seemingly bright future. She reflects the cowardice in us, in those who aspire to luxury, but short of the courage to pursue at our own expense. On the contrary, no amount of fire could challenge the ambition Gatsby stored up in his heart since he was a little boy. Gatsby’s persistence and determination are what I respect him the most, although that led him to his inevitable death in the end. He was willing to be the scapegoat for Daisy after she accidentally killed Myrtle by Gatsby’s car, which caused Myrtle’s husband to take revenge on him before committing suicide. It had touched a raw nerve indeed when Gatsby was killed. The gunshot was like a thunder struck in my mind. Meanwhile, it was as if a dagger that also mercilessly ripped off Gatsby’s ideal vision. He was persistent in pursuit and even after he died, his mind-set of repeating the past with Daisy had never ended. Through Nick’s vision, he contrasted the grand and voluptuous lives nobilities led with the dark sides they've been hiding. Everyone had their own secrets and the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg were like the death stare of God, watching every movement with a peculiar intensity. After the tragedy of Gatsby’s death, it was depressing, for few literally cared about his funeral, even Daisy. Hundreds of people used to attend his parties, but perhaps money is more precious than a man’s life to them. As Gatsby’s closest friend, Meyer Wolfsheim, had said, “Let us show our friendship for a man when he is alive, and leave everything alone after he is dead.” His misfortune seemed of no consequence compared to their wealth or status and that’s what might occur in any place nowadays. What is Gatsby really great at? In one sense, it is the courage of his convictions. He is fearless of challenges and the confidence exudes from him gives people a reassuring feeling. One of Shakespeare’s quotes occurred to me after seeing Gatsby’s sacrifice, “In love folly is always sweet.” We couldn't experience the sensation of pain which the bullet harmed Gatsby; however, the love within touched deeply. Furthermore, the moment when Nick recalled the excitement when Gatsby first saw the green light was appealing, since all of us are also attempting to capture our own green lights- our future that awaits our dream. Gatsby’s green light was almost in his palm, but gradually faded into oblivion. We may be the ones who decide our destiny, but sometimes things go wrong as we didn't expect. As the saying goes, “The pain passes, but the beauty remains.” At least the beautiful memories Gatsby had with Daisy would never be erased and kept in this book forever. 角色 Character 形容詞 Adjective Jay Gatsby remarkable 單字 Word 出現頁數 Page turbulent 17 reluctantly 67 incredulously 84 commotion 84 menagerie 87 句子 Sentence 頁數 Page My lips parted as I opened my mouth to construct some kind of phrase, but no sound came out, and what I had remembered was now lost forever. 89 Until that day, we carry on, against the flow, carried back constantly into the past. 131
