Herbal Pharmacopoeia II
1. COURSE NUMBER: 410A
2. COURSE TITLE: Chinese Pharmacopoeia II
3. INSTRUCTOR: Jiling Hu, L.Ac. OMD(China)
4. COURSE PURPOSE: To provide students with on overview and detailed analysis of
individual herbs from the Chinese materica medica.
5. COURSE OBJECTIVES FOR THE STUDENTS: Students will learn the basic
function, categories, indications, identification and properties of the herbs presented in
class.
6. REQUIRED TEXT/MATERIALS:
a. Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica (new revised Edition) by Dan Bensky
and Andrew Gamble (Eastland Press)
b. Herbal samples
7. RECOMMENDED READINGS/REFERENCES:
a. Handbook of Chinese herbs, Him-Che Yeung
b. A clinic guide Chinese herbs and formulas, Chen Song Yu & Li Fei
c. Dui Yao Philippe Sionneau -Translated by Bernard Cote
8. COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

You will be expected to read the sections in your textbooks prior to the class in which
they are discussed. You will also be required to spend 1 hour per week in the clinic
pharmacy. During this time you must gather your herb samples for the class.

10. PRESENTATION METHODS:
Lectures, discussion and presentation.
11. KEY KNOWLEDGE PRESENTED:
a) Identification of individual herbs
b) The properties and categories of herbs
c) The basic functions and indications of herbs based on TCM theories
d) Remember, repetition is the key to memorization
12. REQUIRED LEVEL OF COMPREHENSION:
Knowledge of categories, indication and properties of herbs. Identification of
individual herbs. Knowledge of contraindications and precautions for groups of herbs
and individual herbs.
13. APPLICATION:
Provide a basis for the study of formulas and the use of individual herbs.
14. PREREQUISITES:
Introduction to herbs, or concurrent with introduction to herbs.
15. MAKE UP EXAMS:
In accordance with YSU policy as stated in the student Handbook, the following rules
apply to make up exam. Students may request make up exams ONLY in the case of
extreme illness or accident, or the death or birth of immediate family. The faculty
member will prepare a new exam for the student. The student must arrange with the
office manager, NOT the faculty member, a time and place to take the make up exam.
The student must pay $100 exam fee plus a $10 per hour proctor fee, to YSU, upon
completion of the exam. Students who are unable to make up a final exam before the
deadline for issuance of grades must request a grade of incomplete in accordance with
YSU's policy on incomplete grades. Early exams will not be given for any reason.
