Co., Ohio, and died 06 Dec 1955 in South Bend, St. Joseph, Indiana.
Notes for FRANK LEMMON PINK:
In an interview for the South Bend News times Newspaper in the early 1930's, Frank was quoted
as saying "South Bend would be the best city in the world if it was on the Ohio River". Frank who
lives at 226 East Sample Street spent 30 years as a combination cook and minstrel on river
boats.
"I learned how to cook after I was married and my wife says I'm pretty good. She taught me. We
were all musically inclined. I used to entertain the crew of the tow boat with my guitar in the
evenings.
It took seven days to go from Pittsburgh to Louisville, towing from 70 to 100 barges of coal. In the
days before the locks, barges would often go aground and would line the shores for miles and
miles until the river would rise. Now it takes a while to tow haul through the locks, a few barges at
a time, but there is a stage of water all year and the trip can be made at any time".
Show Boats supplied the entertainment for river people and the river towns. Mr Pinks brother
traveled with French's New Sensation boat as a comedian and trombone player for 32 years. The
floods provided plenty of excitement. Boats would tie up to a tree when the water got to high and
waited for it to go down.
Mr. Pink use to ply the river too. In a floating boat, a sort of houseboat that went out to retrive
loose logs for the mills, that had washed out in the high water. Persons along the river were paid
so much a log for rafting them and the boat took them back to the mill.
Frank Lemon Pink died at his residence 226 East Sample Street Wed. April 24 1941 after 12
days of illness. He was born in Rising Sun, Indiana, Feb. 8, 1861 and came to South Bend in
1917 from Cincinnati, Ohio. He was married in 1882 in Rising Sun to Miss Laura Leona Vosburg.
His funeral was in the Forest G. Hay funeral home. He was interred at the St. Joseph Valley
Memorial Park.

Laura's Obituary
Mrs. Laura Leona Pink , 410 E. Kern Rd. Center Township, Died at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Harry Kinner with whom she resided the last two years. She was ill two weeks. She was
born in Hamilton County, Ohio July 9, 1864 and came to South Bend in 1917 from Cincinnati. She
was married in Rising Sun, Ind. to Frank Pink. She leaves five other daughters, Florence
Whiteman, of Long Beach Calif., Helen Wile of Cincinnati , Ohio, Clara Chambers of West Palm
Beach, Fla., Mrs. Harold Korkhouse and Mrs. Floyd Chambers, both of South Bend. Three sons,
William of South Bend, Frank of Osceola, and John of Cincinnati. 25 Grandchildren; 61 great
grandchildren and 10 great great Grandchildren.
The funeral took place at Forest G. Hay funeral home and she was intered at the St. Joseph
Valley Memorial Park.
Laura was a member of the Rising Sun Circle 12, Daughters of America.

Robert and Flora got divorced by mutual agreement in 1925. They had planned to get divorced
some years earlier but decided they would wait until the children were grown. (as told by Robert
Jr. to Fred McKenzie and Ronald Woodhull, 2004)
Robert McKenzie obituary: South Bend Tribune Thursday, March 06, 1942:
"Robert McKenzie aged 64, 1221 South Franklin Street, died at 2:45 P.M., Wednesday in his
home after six months of illness. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Nov. 22, 1877, and came here
in 1913 from that city. He was a plumber. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Catherine Hearell, of
Mishawaka, two sons , Robert W.. McKenzie Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif., and Raymond McKenzie
of South Bend, six grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Jean West of South Bend. Friends may call
at the Earl C. Hollis chapel until the funeral there at 2 P.M. Saturday. Rev. C.C.Brown will
officiate."
Buried at Highland Cemetery, South Bend Indiana Left of Council Oak Tree. South Bend’s rich
and colorful history began in December 1679 when French explorer Robert Rene Cavalier Sieur
de La Salle landed on the banks of the St. Joseph River, at what is now Riverview Cemetery.
Two years later, on that same site, under the shade of a great oak tree, La Salle held a council
with Indian leaders, which led to the Miami Treaties. Council Oak still stands in Highland
Cemetery today. Almost 150 years later, in 1820, Pierre Navarre built a cabin on the North side of
the Joseph river near what is now the Michigan St. Bridge. Three years later Alexis Coquillard
founded a fur trade post a short distance from the site of La Salle’s landing and the settlement
that came to be known as South Bend was founded.

Charles "Sweed" Bergstrom, was born in Sweden and immigrated to the U.S.. His occupation at
that time was bootlegging. Apparently he was very abusive to Florence and the marriage only
lasted about a year. (told to Ronald Woodhull and Fred McKenzie by Robert McKenzie Jr., 2004)

Charles and Flora were married in 1929 during prohibition. Nick named "Sweed" he opened a
speakeasy roadhouse on Sample road. Sweed had a home brew business going and sold as
many as ten cases of beer a day to saloons around town. Robert and Raymond delivered it for
him. Berstrom was mean and liked to beat Flora, when she decided she had had enough the got
divorced.

Raymond Baker was adopted by Fred and Lottie Woodhull in December , 1931. Sarah Catherine
and George Vernon Baker were separated before the birth of Raymond. With no income and a
two year old and a new born baby Sarah decided that for the baby's own good it would be better
to adopt him out. Raymond was given the name of Ronald Woodhull. The adoption and name
change were not done with any court involved there was no legal record. The name change was
made permanent by Raymond int the September 1949 term of the St. Joeseph County Circuit
court.
