BIFMA Testing | level®
In response to requests from all elements of the contract furniture industry, the Business and Institutional
Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) and NSF International (NSF), in partnership with stakeholders
from across the industry, developed an open, consensus based method to evaluate the sustainable attributes
of products. Released in June 2008, the BIFMA e3-2008 Sustainability Standard addresses all three aspects of
sustainability (environmental, economic and social) and includes criteria for evaluating human & ecosystem
health, energy, natural resources and corporate social responsibility impacts. The purpose of this voluntary
standard is to provide measurable market-based definitions of progressively more sustainable furniture by
establishing performance criteria that addresses environmental and social aspects throughout the supply
chain.
As a follow-up to the e-3 standard, BIFMA announced the introduction of level®, the multi-attribute,
sustainability standard and third-party certification program for the furniture industry. It was created to
deliver the most open and transparent means of evaluating and communicating the environmental and social
impacts of furniture products in the built environment. With level, customers can make informed choices
about commercial furniture that exceed single attribute eco-certifications. The level brand identifies that a
product has been vetted by an independent third party certifier and its numeric marking 1, 2 or 3 indicates
what threshold of certification it has achieved.
Nevers Industries Inc. is currently re-testing all furniture collections to meet or exceed ANSI | SOHO S6.5-2008 (R2013)
Standards for Small Office and Home Office Furniture Tests per the American National Standard for Office Furnishings.
