Catalog Description:
Use of administrative concepts in the solution of the
problems in a simulated school; assessment of student ability to
apply knowledge in the solution of practical problems; time management techniques for administrators; conflict management strategies;
and school and principal effectiveness. This is the capstone course and
is taken immediately prior to the internship course.
Prerequisite:
Admission to professional education program and 24 hours of course
work.

Student Learner Outcomes:
1.
The candidate will conduct a principal interview using a structured interview process with
questions designed around the principal competencies.
2.
The candidate will participate in a team to develop school improvement project for a campus that
is Academically Unacceptable and will develop a school improvement plan to improve atudent
learning and performance on the TAKS test. Teams will be organized according to current job
assignment or interest.
3.
The candidate will conduct research that will focus on identified campus needs for the campus
selected for the school improvement plan and submit abstracts of their findings.
4.
The candidate will develop a philosophy statement regarding their beliefs, attitudes, and
perceptions of campus leadership.
Attendance
Students enrolled at one of the University’s external campuses
should make every effort to attend all class meetings. All
absences must be explained to the instructor, who will then
determine whether the omitted work may be made up. When a
student reaches that number of absences considered by the
instructor to be excessive, the instructor will so advise the
student and file an unsatisfactory progress report with the
campus dean. Any student who misses 25 percent or more of the
regularly scheduled class meetings may receive a grade of F in the
course. Additional attendance policies for each course, as defined
by the instructor in the course syllabus, are considered a part of
the University’s attendance policy. A student may petition the
Academic Council for exceptions to the above stated policies by
filing a written request for an appeal to the executive vice
president/provost.

Develop Strategies for a Campu Improvement Plan
Article Abstracts – Participants will conduct a review of current, best practices
that are aligned with each administrative competency. The abstracts are to be
secured from recognized professional journals and studies. Abstracts are to be
one-page, single-spaced. APA style is required for the abstract.
Action Items for Administrative Competencies – For each domain, students
will determine action items a principal could implement in the performance of
his/her duties. The items can originate from article abstracts and the principal
interviews.
Principal Interviews – A structured, principal interview will be conducted
during the semester. Questions for the interviews are to be aligned with the
principal competencies and are to designed to provide additional insight for each
competency. A summary report of the interviews is to be submitted at the
conclusion of the semester.
Administrative Philosophy Statement – Students will prepare a Philosophy
Statement that best represents their own beliefs and values regarding the
administrative competencies as represented in Texas law. The Philosophy
Statement should be single-spaced and no more than one-page.

A – Successful Completion of the Following Projects:
- No more than two absences from scheduled class meetings
- Article abstracts supporting administrative competencies
- Conduct a principal interview and summary report
- Compose an Action Plan for Administrative Competencies
- Philosophy Statement of School Administration
- Summary of specific questions from text
- Assist in the development of a Campus Improvement Plan
- An average of 90 or above on exams
OR
B – Successful Completion of the Following Projects:
- No more than two absences from scheduled class meetings
- Article abstracts supporting administrative competencies
- Conduct a principal interview and summary report
- Compose an Action Plan for Administrative Competencies
- Philosophy Statement of School Adminstration
- Summary of specific questions from text
- Assist in the development of a Campus Improvement Plan
- An average of 80 or above on exams
