Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Animal SCience Distribution List News Alert – 03/28/2005 Please distribute to research team members and/or post in animal facilities View this announcement and other education information at www.umbc.edu/iacuc National Animal Welfare Education Program OLAW Sponsored IACUC 101s http://grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/iacuc101s.htm General Information The IACUC 101 series consist of didactic and interactive training programs designed to provide IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) members, administrators, veterinarians, animal care staff, researchers, regulatory personnel and compliance officers with information on the role and responsibilities of IACUCs, including an understanding of federal policies and regulations governing laboratory animal welfare. Originally conceived and developed by four members of the Applied Research Ethics National Association - Mary Lou James, Monte Matthews, Molly Green and Marky Pitts - the program is delivered by a professional faculty renowned for their expertise in institutional animal care and use issues and program development. Faculty members represent academic and private biomedical research institutions, the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare and USDA Animal Care. All programs in the series include opportunity for open questions and answers with regulatory authorities. In some instances, an IACUC 101 is designed for a particular audience, e.g., scientists, or offered in conjunction with a professional meeting. Each program features two kinds of sessions: comprehensive overviews of the laws, regulations and policies supplemented with examples and approaches for successful and effective implementation and administration, and an opportunity to participate in deliberative and challenging mock IACUC sessions with the benefit of guidance from the faculty. These interactive sessions demonstrate the application of information presented during the didactic sessions. The ability to meet and talk to faculty and network with other IACUC 101 participants is also a valuable component of the course. Students receive an extensive Resource Manual specifically prepared for their IACUC 101 session, along with relevant laws, regulations, policies and guidelines. IACUC 101 is a full day program covering historical perspectives, key components of an animal care and use program, IACUC functions, program evaluations and inspections, protocol review and personnel qualifications and training. Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Animal SCience Distribution List News Alert – 03/28/2005 IACUC 101.5 is a one and a half day program that includes IACUC 101 but adds an additional half day of three tracts based on an individual's IACUC role, responsibility and interests. Each tract focuses on the various possible approaches for conducting protocol review, program review and facility inspection within the requirements of the laws, regulations and policy. Registrants reconvene for an open discussion on timely Hot Topics of the audience's choice. IACUC 101 PLUS is a one-day program that includes IACUC 101 as well as the opportunity for participants to consider more advanced topics, such as collaborative research, off-site animals, Just-In-Time procedures, protocol-grant comparison and environmental enrichment. Lead by two to four faculty, these advanced interactive sessions offer opportunities to discuss and consider relevant fine points and best approaches for each topic. IACUC 201 “The Process Plus” is a highly interactive program that takes the fundamentals of IACUC 101 and applies them to the process and mechanisms of ensuring compliance. The morning session is divided into 3 tracts based on an individual's IACUC role, responsibility and interests. Each tract focuses on the various possible approaches for conducting protocol review, program review and facility inspection within the requirements of the laws, regulations and policy. Registrants reconvene for an open discussion on timely Hot Topics of the audience's choice. During the afternoon session, a mock IACUC consisting of IACUC 201 faculty convene to address one or more complex scenarios with multiple opportunities for audience questions. Host Institutions and Organizations The IACUC 101 series are regional programs that requires a host institution or organization to be involved in logistical planning and arrangements. Each program can typically accommodate up to 150-180 individuals who must each register individually. The host institution incurs responsibility for receiving and handling registrations, and agrees to pay non-government faculty travel, per diem and associated program costs. When sponsoring an IACUC 101 program, OLAW provides limited financial sponsorship through an agreement with the host institution. Contact Information The OLAW-sponsored IACUC 101 series are planned, coordinated and administered by Mary Lou James, Regulatory Consultant, 314-997-6896, email: mljames@mo.net.
