English Philology, full time BA studies, four specializations
The Institute of English at Opole University was officially founded on October 1st, 1978, which was a result of the growing demand of teachers and other specialists in the field of
English. Despite modest beginnings with only five academic teachers, the Institute has become a strong academic centre educating hundreds of students over the years.
Currently, there are employed 28 academic teachers including 9 professors, who continuously develop professionally.
The Institute comprises four departments: Department of the English Language,
Department of Applied Linguistics, Department of Literature, and Department of
Anglophone Cultures. To ensure a high quality of education in the Institute, all our academic teachers regularly participate in trainings and specialist conferences in Poland and abroad.
The Institute follows strictly the guidelines of European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which makes it possible for our students to choose and visit a foreign university as a host for one or two semester English study programmes within ERASMUS. Our partners are in
Spain, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus. We also host students coming from these academic centres.
Studying English Philology at BA level, the students gain knowledge of language, literature, and culture and history of English-speaking countries as well as practical language skills at a high C1 proficiency level. The students may choose one of the following specializations:

BA studies finish with a BA defense and a BA degree.
The studies help to acquire knowledge needed to work in the area of cultural studies, in bilingual workplaces, as a translator or in foreign companies. All courses offered at our institute are conducted in English.

The three-year BA study programme includes the following groups of subjects:

Specialization subjects (connected with a selected specialization)
General subjects (philosophy, foreign language courses, physical education, variable courses)

2) SPECIALIZATION
– ENGLISH AND SPANISH
The aim of the specialization is to prepare students to work in bilingual workplaces
(publishing houses, travel agencies). The specialization subjects include:
Practical Spanish (integrated skills, communication skills, phonetics)
Culture of Spanish-speaking countries

– TRANSLATION STUDIES
The aim of the specialization is to prepare students to work as translators. The specialization subjects include:

4) SPECIALIZATION - BUSINESS ENGLISH
The aim of the specialization is to prepare students to work in companies where the knowledge of business English is essential. The specialization offers the following courses:
Fundamentals of economics
Introduction to Business English
Business communication skills
Business English correspondence
Business English text analysis
Business English translation
friendly and professional attitude of academic teachers towards their students
modern lecture rooms in the newly renovated historical building of Collegium Maius equipped with modern audiovisual technology;
modern library and reading room offering access to an extensive collection of
Anglo-Saxon literature (more than 37 thousand volumes devoted to various aspects of culture and language of English speaking countries and 100 titles of journals and magazines devoted to teaching). Searching for books and articles is easy with a user friendly cataloging system ALEPH, an Internet data base POLANKA that has access to library catalogues of ten English Philologies in leading universities in
Poland. The library is also equipped with modern computer technology with access to the Internet and professional data bases with international library resources, for example, EBSCO, LION, PROQUEST or OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY (ON-
LINE);
modern computer room with several stands.
Our students can enroll in a student exchange programme Sokrates-Erasmus offered by
Opole University, which allows for studying abroad for a semester or two, developing foreign language communication skills, learning about culture of a foreign country and gaining professional knowledge via a foreign language.
Our students finish their studies with strong communication skills in English in writing and speaking, ability to search for information in various sources, to analyze and synthesize information, and to work effectively both independently and in teams. They are well prepared for a career in, for example:

The students interested in gaining teaching qualifications are advised to continue their MA studies with the teacher training specialization or can enroll in additional teacher training post-graduate studies also offered by the Institute of English.
