NEAL’S YARD REMEDIES - JOB DESCRIPTION HEAD OF SUSTAINABILITY OCTOBER 2011 GENERAL NOTE ABOUT JOB DESCRIPTIONS AT NYR The purpose of a job description is to make sure that both the individual and the company are clear about the role, responsibilities and tasks the post-holder is expected to carry out and how the post-holder contributes to the aims and objectives of Neal’s Yard Remedies. However, we operate in a rapidly changing and highly competitive environment, so it is important that job descriptions are flexible, to enable the company to respond quickly to changes and to accommodate the development of the individual. Job descriptions will be reviewed at least once a year as part of the Performance and Development Plan process. In addition, they will be reviewed prior to recruiting. Job descriptions will be supported by objectives that are specific to the individual and set out the targets, goals and improvements to be achieved in a set time period. CONTEXT The Head of Sustainability is a key member of the management team, reporting to the Medicines Director. The post-holder can be based either at Neal’s Yard Remedies’ London offices; 1 Neal’s Yard, Covent Garden, or at our Neal’s Yard Remedies head offices in Peacemarsh, Gillingham, Dorset. OVERALL JOB PURPOSE The Head of Sustainability is required to design, develop and deliver a cutting edge integrated approach to sustainability at Neal’s Yard Remedies. This role will be directly involved in the initiation and delivery of key projects as well as the identification of new CSR opportunities and directions. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Preparation and assessment of strategies, initiatives, projects and key reporting measures relating to Neal’s Yard Remedies environmental practices. Sourcing of NGOs. Advising NYR internal team on best practice campaign management and coordination of campaign management with NYR marketing team. Sustainability appraisal/strategic assessment/appropriate measurement according to accepted best practice standards. Development of carbon strategy and dissemination of information. Leading external consultants to undertake research, analysis and prepare reports and documentation. Advice on and/or preparation of applied sustainable initiatives and measures, for instance carbon neutral development/master-planning. Compiling/devising sustainability checklists to assess/evaluate business practices. Working closely with Technical and Purchasing teams, create a master document for certification approval of raw materials into the NYR range. To establish acceptable protocols to deal with identified issues and responsible for message delivery across the business. Management of Red List. Supplying marketing media information such as provision of stories. Develop a thorough working knowledge and understanding of emerging best practices, tried and tested methods as well as the latest research on complex sustainability concepts. Represent NYR in relevant conferences and seminars and provide relevant information to company representatives acing as spokesperson in sustainability arena. Update director team to assist their strategic planning and policy development. Develop and Implement policies as appropriate ie. energy, ingredient, animal testing. Responsible for engaging and leading external consultants, setting objectives and managing project delivery. Budget control. Continuous Improvement and Self Development • Seek ways of improving how own job is done and look for opportunities to do things more effectively. • Make suggestions to line manager regarding improvements that will affect other people or departments. Special Characteristics This is a new role requiring considerable cross functional working. Therefore strong communication and project management skills required.
