Outreach Notice Gila National Forest Black Range Ranger District Truth or Consequences, NM Black Range Ranger District Office Rangeland Management Specialist GS-0454-11 Permanent Full-Time The Gila National Forest will be filling a Rangeland Management Specialist position located on the Black Range Ranger District, Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. This notification is being circulated to inform prospective applicants of the upcoming opportunity and to determine interest in this position. Position Information This permanent full time position manages the district range program. The employee serves as principal contact and negotiator on rangeland resources and activities including advising land owners on appropriate laws, regulations and policies. Conducts field studies requiring extension or modifications of existing techniques to solve rangeland resource issues while providing leadership in accomplishing Forest Service multicultural organizational direction. Coordinates within the unit to ensure timeliness, form, procedure, quality and quantity standards are met in individual cases while creating an environment which respects, appreciates and accepts the contributions and perspectives of all employees. Prepares long and short-range allotment plans based on multiple-use rangeland resource needs, available work force, equipment and budget constraints. Prepares and reviews ecological assessments for inclusion in the environmental documentation record. Monitors, inspects and analyzes rangeland resources and uses to determine the effectiveness of ongoing management actions and possible alternatives or planned management practices or changes that will help achieve diverse land management goals more effectively. Work will require the use of horses, pack stock, ATVs, UTVs, 4x4 pickups and trailers. Some work will occur in wilderness and require associated skills. This position will support wildfire management as directed and will have other duties assigned. The work of the Rangeland Management Specialist affects the efficient utilization, protection and development of the resources involved and the social and/or economic well-being of users of the resources. Team work is a highly valued and expected component of the Black Range District work environment. Gila National Forest The Forest is 3.3 million acres of rugged mountain ranges in southwestern New Mexico. Elevation ranges from 4,200’-10,900’. The forest is home to the Gila, Aldo Leopold and Blue Range Wildernesses, headwaters of the Gila River, Mimbres River and part of the San Francisco River. It is home to abundant wildlife and plant species including Mexican gray wolves, Mexican spotted owls and Gila trout. The Gila National Forest boasts a rich history of Native American, Spanish and Mexican cultures, miners, ranchers and others. Black Range Ranger District The Black Range Ranger District administers 522,615 acres of the Gila National Forest. Located on the easternmost side of the forest, elevations range from 4,500 to 10,895 feet. The district has an abundant population of wildlife with grasslands, chaparral, woodland pine and mixed conifer habitats. The district’s two outposts are; Beaverhead Work Station and Kingston Administrative Site. Beaverhead Work Station is located 82 miles northwest on New Mexico Highway 59. Kingston Administrative Site is located 40 miles southwest on New Mexico Highway 52. Extensive driving is a component to work assignments on the district. Community Information Truth or Consequences (T or C) is located in the Rio Grande Valley of southern New Mexico. Originally Palomas Hot Springs, the town changed its name to Truth or Consequences in 1950 in response to a challenge from a popular radio show by the same name. The town and surrounding area supports a population of approximately 10,000 full-time residents. Over 20 churches of various denominations are available for attendance. The school system is a kindergarten through 12th grade. Western University Learning Center makes available a varied schedule of courses. Elevation is approximately 4,200 feet. The community experiences average summer daytime temperatures of 92 degrees and mild winters with average daytime temperatures of 48 degrees. Annual precipitation is 10-12” with humidity normally between 10-15%. Windy spring and sunshine filled days are in abundance. Recreation and Culture T or C and the surrounding area offers a multitude of recreational opportunities including water sports, golfing, natural hot springs, hunting, fishing and sight seeing. The Rio Grande River, Elephant Butte and Caballo Lake State Parks are within minutes driving distance. Historically the area was the home of Native American cultures, eastern settlers, miners and ranchers. Medical Sierra Vista Hospital, Medical Clinics, dental and eye care are available. Full service facilities are located in Las Cruces and Albuquerque. Housing There are endless housing opportunities within the community of T or C , Elephant Butte, Williamsburg and surrounding communities and rural areas.
